FOREST LAKE — First-place finishes in all four categories propelled the Stillwater synchronized swimming team to a 33-14 victory over its biggest rival in the East Metro Conference on Tuesday, May 7 at the Forest Lake Education Center.
The Rangers, who placed third at state a year ago, remain the biggest challenger for the Ponies among conference teams. Stillwater (6-0 EMC, 6-0) defeated the Rangers 20-9 in a figures meet earlier this season and delivered impressive performances to complete the sweep in the routines meet to capture the conference title outright.
“It was a great meet,” Ponies coach Kathy Henderson said. “Forest Lake is our biggest conference competitor and their team is strong.”
Forest Lake (4-2, 4-2) is the only team to defeat Stillwater in a dual meet during in the past 35 years. The Ponies improved to 231-3-1 dating back to the 1989 season.
Hailey Schmit outscored Forest Lake’s Grace Chatwin 80.920-77.980 to win the solo division and joined sister Paige Schmit to win the duet with a score of 84.020.
Stillwater finished first and third in the trio, led by Isana Downing, Annie Gritters and Paige Schmit with a winning total of 78.000. Forest Lake (70.460) was able to narrowly hold off Stillwater’s Kate Jentink, Megan Johnson and Elaina Lokken (70.220) for second place in the trio.
The Ponies also posted a score of 83.860 to outdistance Forest Lake (77.510) by more than six points in the team division.
Next up for Stillwater is the East Section Meet on May 17-18.
