STEVENSVILLE — A vibrant rainbow cascade of confetti flew through the warm afternoon air symbolizing a commitment to spreading joy and kindness as Kent Island Elementary School second graders and behavioral mental health group For All Seasons celebrated Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day May 7.

Encouraged to “spread kindness like confetti” the students were given a handful of the colorful paper to partake in For All Season’s sponsored “confetti challenge.”

The playground erupted with cheers and delight as teachers and students alike celebrated joy and brushed biodegradable confetti out of their hair.

By participating in the challenge, students and teachers dedicated themselves to helping take care of each other’s mental health and focus on spreading joy instead of dwelling on the negative.

Bringing a burst of color to the school day, the confetti challenge is a symbolic way to celebrate the importance of spreading kindness and joy, said Katie Theeke, For All Seasons vice president of marketing.

The confetti challenge was started by For All Seasons in 2021 as a silly way to have fun and as a reminder that taking a few moments out of your day to make others feel good can have a positive impact on yourself as well, Theeke said.

Approximately one in five children will suffer from a diagnosed mental health illness, she said, and For All Seasons is a Mid-Shore behavioral health group that is always eager to partner with local schools and showcase opportunities for mental health activities.

As every child deserves to grow up feeling supported, and understood, Children’s Mental Health Day welcomes everyone to come together to offer kindness, empathy, and resources, according to Theeke.

The confetti challenge day also coincided with Twin Day as part of the statewide Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week. Events and activities all week highlighted the importance of understanding positive mental health as essential to overall well being.

Dressing as twins showcases the importance of finding a trusted friend, Principal Cassandra Cornish said, matching a complete ensemble down to the sneakers alongside Assistant Principal Kathy Barletta.
