State College, Pa. — The State College community is grieving the death of Park Forest Middle School student, Abigail “Abby” Smith.

Smith, who was an eighth grader, died over the weekend.

According to Statecollege.com , PFMS Principal Karen Wiser wrote a message to families on Sunday:

“Abby was a kind, bright young woman who brightened the lives of those around her through her warm smile, caring spirit, and involvement in activities like the symphonic band and school band as well as Girl Scouts,” Wiser wrote.

District administrators sent out a message on Monday, writing that Abby died by suicide.

To support the students and facilitate discussions surrounding the tragic loss, over 20 school counselors and mental health professionals were present at Park Forest Middle School, as well as in classrooms at Gray's Woods for grades 3 through 5 and other areas within the district that had personal connections to Abby.

“Though we are just at the beginning stages of this grieving process, from what we witnessed today, we’re confident we will continue to be there for each other,” the administrators wrote. “Seeing all the interactions, we were personally touched by everyone’s strength, empathy, and desire to help those closely affected by Abby’s death.”

The district urged families and students to contact the Center for Community Resources crisis line or use the Safe2Say reporting system when in need.

Michelle Varrassa established a meal train and donation page for Abby's family, which has garnered an outpouring of support from the community. As of Tuesday afternoon, the initiative has raised nearly $35,000.

Smith has two siblings in the State College Area School District.

“Abby may have passed far too soon, but the memories, compassion and integrity she embodied will live on in our hearts,” Wiser wrote. “Our deepest condolences go out to Abby’s family and all who knew and loved her.”
