Augusta's air quality gets mixed grades in new report
An annual nationwide report recently gave Augusta a mixed report on the quality of its air, earning the area an "A" grade for ozone levels, but failing it for particle pollution. The annual report from the American Lung Association tracks levels of ozone smog and particle pollution, citing wildfires, such as the one raging in south Georgia, as a significant source of air pollution. The State of the Air report, released nationwide last week, serves as an air quality report card that ranks the most polluted and cleanest cities, according to a news release. “This is our 27th annual ‘State of the Air’ report,” said Danna Thompson, director of advocacy for the American Lung Association in Georgia. “It grades county air quality over a three‑year period. The report translates complex air pollution data into a report card to help people better understand their air quality and protect themselves and their families.” Augusta ranked among the nation’s cleanest cities for ozone pollution, earning an A grade, according to the report. The metro area ranked 180th worst nationwide for short‑term particle pollution and earned a B grade. For year‑round particle pollution, the metro area ranked 41st nationally and received a failing grade.
