Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. That chain, based in South Korea, now also has locations at 15895 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 1360

Overland Park farmers market fan favorite to close its doors this month

A fan favorite at the Overland Park farmers market, that opened its first brick-and-mortar location in August, is closing its doors. Black Rose, which opened inside Entity Lounge at 11216 Switzer Rd. closed its doors Oct. 31, according to a Facebook post. “We are incredibly grateful to the Entity team for giving Black Rose another place to call home and for the opportunity to bring our coffee into their space,” the post said. “Being able to take this step with our business meant so much to us, and we truly appreciate the opportunity.” Co-owner Marissa Ray told The Star Monday that it was a difficult decision for her and her brother, Dustin Hogue, to reach. Shortly after opening the café, she got some personal news that has since shifted her priorities and capacity to operate the storefront. “I had to be realistic about what I could continue to give to the business,” Ray said in a statement. “Black Rose has grown and changed so much since we started, and I’m incredibly proud of what we were able to build. At the same time, I reached a point where I knew I could not continue giving the business the time, consistency

Royals-tied company buys 28-story office tower near Crown Center, future stadium site

A company tied to the Royals purchased a 28-story office building near Crown Center, the team confirmed Thursday. The Kansas City Business Journal was the first to report that the affiliate, 2345 Real Estate Holdings LLC, recently purchased the tower at 2345 Grand Blvd., alongside a four-story building in the same complex. The building is about half vacant after Lathrop GPM moved to a nearby location this year. The team would like existing tenants to stay in the building while looking for new ones, including office tenants, as the building joins what will become a broader ballpark district and “live-work-play neighborhood” centered on Crown Center and a new Royals stadium that will replace the existing Hallmark headquarters. The Royals will not be putting their future offices in 2345 Grand, but will be building offices near the future ballpark, which is expected to begin construction next year. A Royals-tied company also purchased the former Blue Cross Blue Shield building, also near Crown Center, at 2301 Main St. earlier this year. Plans for that property are to be announced.

In March 2024, Rice was driving 119 mph in a Lamborghini Urus on a Dallas highway before causing a six-car crash , according to an arrest warrant. Among new openings: A luxury leather retail shop opened a new location and adjoining coffee shop, featuring aesthetic drinks and sweet treats in the shape of its purses. We also said goodbye to a dueling piano bar that had been opened in Kansas City’s Power and Light entertainment district for nearly 18 years. Taylor-Made Homefront: Prairie Village can’t keep its future in a time capsule

I have had some version of this conversation with home sellers more times than I can count. They are preparing to move, and there is a dining room set, china cabinet, or another piece of furniture that has been in the family for years. It is well-made, holds wonderful memories, and surely one of their children will want it.
