Monday, April 15: Taxed with high temperatures once again
By Tom Schmidt,
It was a warm weekend with Springfield recording our warmest day of the year so far in 2024 at 83 degrees on Sunday. More warm weather is coming before we get a little cooler over this next weekend.
Today will be warm in the low 80s with increasing clouds through the afternoon ahead of our next storm. Winds will be breezy from the south around 10 to 20 mph.
There is a risk for severe weather late this evening across parts of Oklahoma and Kansas along the dryline. However, thunderstorm coverage will be low as a strong cap is in place inhibiting storms from developing along a warm front in central Missouri. The cap is firmly in place over the Ozarks and thunderstorm concerns tonight are at a minimum even as storms move in from Kansas.
While some thunder and lightning is possible Tuesday morning before noon, the severe weather risk is low. Another round of isolated thunderstorms is possible later Tuesday evening/night as a cold front approaches, but storm chances are also low with less instability across the southern Ozarks. That being said, some wind and hail are possible with Tuesday evening storms.
Overall, some spots will stay dry from tonight and tomorrow although some isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible.
Wednesday will be a great day with skies clearing and temperatures stabilizing in the upper 70s. Winds will be out of the northeast around 10 to 20 mph. Thursday will be warmer near 80 degrees with south winds returning as another storm approaches.
Rain chances increase from Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. There may be just enough instability to warrant some stronger thunderstorm activity Thursday, but overall we’ll likely just see a round of run-of-the-mill thunderstorms.
After this system exits the area we’ll be bringing temperatures down to below normal through the weekend. Expect highs in the mid-60s to upper 50s Friday through Sunday.
