SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)–As part of a city-wide effort with Springfield’s Department of Veterans’ Services to honor and remember those who have served our country, MGM Springfield employees were proud to help carry on this tradition of flagging veterans graves across the city.

Approximately 22,000 veteran graves are located in cemeteries throughout Springfield and twice a year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, city volunteers come together to participate in flagging efforts.

MGM Springfield employees helped place flags throughout the Springfield Cemetery.

“People have given their lives for us to enjoy this freedom over many centuries of this country’s existence and it’s just a small part for us to recognize the veterans here in Springfield and throughout Western Mass by placing flags at their tombstones,” said Louis Theros, President and COO of MGM Springfield.

MGM’s team members spent the day walking throughout the cemetery placing a flag next to each grave of all of the veterans buried there.

And just a reminder that even though Memorial Day Weekend has come to be known as the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is supposed to be about mourning the nation’s fallen service members.
