The victim was transported to a hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries after fighting off her assailant and escaping.

A 31-year-old Springfield man was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly cutting a woman’s throat in the city with a box cutter.

According to the victim, the man, who she did not know and who police later identified as Jovan Murphy, followed her down Union Street at around 3:45 a.m. He then held a box cutter to her neck and cut her throat as she fought him off and escaped, police said.

Officers responded to the scene and provided medical care until the woman was transported to Baystate Medical Center with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

Members of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center captured a photo of the suspect. Officers later found Murphy around Montpelier Street where they arrested him.

Additional charges were brought forth as officers identified Murphy as the suspect in a May 3 attack and sexual assault as well.

Murphy is currently charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of armed assault to murder, armed kidnapping with sexual assault, aggravated rape, and more.
