SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)–A Springfield firefighter retired his uniform Friday after serving the department for over three decades.

Deputy Fire Chief David A. Wells has retired after 36 years of dedicated service to the City of Springfield Fire Department. Wells described this day like a high school graduation as he prepares to enter the next phase of his life.

From a firefighter to Lieutenant, then Captain and now Deputy Chief, David’s dedication and service has been invaluable and has made Springfield a better place to live and work.

He was joined at a party by his loving family, former military officers who served with him in Iran, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, fire commissioner BJ Calvi, and members of the SFD.

Wells offered these parting words of advice to his colleagues. “Just take care of yourselves and each other mentally and physically. It’s the best job in the world but it’s a job that can kill you or injure you. So train like your lives depend on it because it does. And just fill the community. There’s nothing better than that when you can help someone else.”

Mayor Sarno said that Wells has strived to make the SFD the best it can be and the city has been very fortunate to have his skill and professionalism in training firefighters and in emergency communications.

Wells looks forward to being able to enjoy retirement with his friends and family by his side.
