SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission has issued a proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2025.

Higher rates leading to a slightly increased bill is what those who receive a water and sewer bill from the commission should brace for. Laid out in the proposed budget is an average 6.3-percent increase for residential customers which comes out to about an additional $8 per month tacked onto your bill.

The commission has attributed the higher rates to the ongoing water and wastewater infrastructure renewal program and rising costs of chemicals, labor and insurance. Though rates would go up, the proposed budget would also increase the yearly discount for seniors, disabled and disabled Veteran homeowners.

When announcing the proposed changes, the commission acknowledged the impact an increased bill can have on its customers, but stated, “Ratepayers will benefit from this reinvestment through the elimination of risks associated with century-old or obsolete infrastructure that threaten service reliability and compliance with modern regulations.”

A virtual public hearing on these proposed changes is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th. The board votes on the budget in mid-June.
