It’s now November, which means Thanksgiving is right around the corner — and perhaps just as importantly, a free holiday meal for the community. The event that unfolds at First Baptist Church in Mount Airy has been a Thanksgiving tradition since it was launched in 1996 by the group Friends of a Brighter Community, led by local singer Melva Houston. “I never thought it would last for 30 years,” Daris Wilkins, one of the group’s members who has been involved all that time, said of the free Thanksgiving feast seasoned with a spirit of unity. It originally was planned as a one-time event, but “Melva liked it, so we decided to have one annually,” Wilkins said. Preparations for the serving begin early, with organizers meeting at the church on Oct. 20 to lay out the 2026 game plan. Tradition continues The 30th annual free thanksgiving meal is scheduled this year on Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will observe a format adopted in recent years whereby plates with turkey and all the

Jim Messina brings his 50 year song portfolio to Jefferson Center

Jim Messina was half of the 1970’s duo Loggins and Messina. Loggins went on to fame with songs like Danger Zone in the 80’s while Messina has worked more as a producer for other artists. But its Jim Messina who is at center stage next Thursday November 5 in Roanoke. Messina worked with Buffalo Springfield and then Poco, in roles as a producer and/or bass player. Loggins and Messina was sort of an accident; he joined Loggins in studio for an album that was released with both their names in the title – and a hit-making duo was born.
