GSP, employers look to fill positions as airport expands

GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Governor Henry McMaster proclaimed this week as South Carolina Aviation Week. One way the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is celebrating is by highlighting the job opportunities at the airport.

“I am a really big person about spreading my wings, so what better place to be around a bunch of wings that’s flying around,” said job seeker Olivia Willams.

The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport hosted its first-ever career fair on Tuesday.

“We have 10 different employers that operate here at the GSP Airport through all different career opportunities. So anywhere from our airlines to ground handlers, hospitality, retail options and special services. There are a variety of different careers,” airport communication manager Tiffany Cherry said.

Those jobs have a big impact on the community.

“Airports are economic engines. They bring jobs, travelers, and cargo to and from our state and they are crucial to our state’s development,” said Melanie Friscoe, account executive with the South Carolina Aviation Association.

“The airport supports nearly 20,000 jobs here in the Upstate South Carolina and with that brings in an annual income of about one billion,” Cherry added.

GSP said they are continuing to expand their reach.

“This is set to be a record year for the airport. In a couple of weeks, we are bringing on a new airline, Breeze Airways, which they are introducing five new routes. We also, through some of our existing carriers, have added additional routes,” Cherry added. “So, we are expecting an increase in the number of travelers not just for summer travel, but throughout the entire year.”

To prepare for an increase in travelers, GSP told 7NEWS they are looking to fill the open positions for those who want to take their careers to new heights.

“I am currently looking for a new establishment to become a part of and grow within the company. I am totally excited,” Williams said. “You get to meet different people from all different types of places. It’s never like a dull scene.”

The airport and its carriers are hiring a variety of different jobs at different skill levels.
