Poulsbo Hits Pause on Waterfront Paid Parking After Merchants Cry Foul

Poulsbo's City Council voted Wednesday to temporarily suspend paid parking at the downtown waterfront lot, effective immediately through May 31, 2027, ending a pilot that had run for about two months and 20 days and had drawn steady complaints from merchants and residents. Three-hour timed parking will return to the Anderson Parkway lot during the suspension, while time-limit enforcement continues there and throughout the downtown core.

Want a bullet train from Seattle to Portland? Here's your chance to weigh in

A bullet train whisking passengers from Seattle to Portland or Vancouver, B.C., in about an hour may be a distant dream, but Washington transportation officials want your help shaping it. Why it matters: The proposed high-speed rail system could transform travel along the increasingly congested Interstate 5 corridor, offering an alternative to driving or flying between the Pacific Northwest's largest metro areas. The Cascadia region is projected to add 3.4 million residents by 2050, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation, putting more pressure on its transportation network. Driving the news: WSDOT wants the public's input on its Cascadia High-Speed Rail proposal by Nov. 13. The survey asks about transportation needs and priorities as the agency studies potential routes, train speeds, stops and connections to existing transit. It also seeks feedback on the separate I-5 Master Plan , which examines future highway improvements. What they're saying: "We want to know who's going to use it and how," WSDOT spokesperson Steve Peer told Axios. "It's very important to get public input because it really guides us on moving forward." How it works: The proposed trains would travel at 200 mph or more on new, dedicated tracks, with fewer stops than

Jake: Seattle-to-Portland bullet train is a hilariously horrible idea

I’ve ridden high-speed rail all over Europe. It was a novelty, and it was convenient. But America is not Europe, which is why a Seattle-to-Portland bullet train is an awful idea. There are plenty of reasons, but let’s zero in on the most obvious one: cost. The best...

‘This is a problem.' Ferry service cuts prompt outcry on Pierce County island

Proposed service cuts to the Anderson Island ferry in 2027, including on weekends, holidays and both early and late daily runs, have prompted outcry from residents who say rates are increasing despite a reduction in service. More than 700 people filled out a recent survey about the proposed changes, said Josh Diekmann, the director of Pierce County’s Planning and Public Works Department. In a statement Thursday, Diekmann said staff are “conducting a full analysis of the survey data to prepare an updated schedule,” which will be presented along with survey results to the Anderson Island Community Advisory Board later this month. “While that analysis is still underway, we have heard the community’s concerns clearly — particularly regarding the proposed Sunday schedule and two-boat service changes. We have also received feedback from first responders who serve Anderson Island, and we are closely evaluating how our proposed schedule can be adjusted,” Diekmann said. “We’re seeing maintenance needs increase significantly for our two ferries as they age. The initial schedule proposal was developed to direct more of our ferry program’s limited resources toward critical maintenance work and provide more reliable day-to-day service. We know that any schedule change can have real impacts on
