Red, White, & Blue BBQ – Sandhills Adult & Teen Challenge – May 24
Sandhills Adult and Teen Challenge, based out of Carthage, is hosting a Memorial Day Red, White & BBQ benefiting their Military Specialization Program. Plates will be $10 and include pulled pork, baked beans, slaw, and a roll. Participating locations are Community Thrift Store in Aberdeen and Forte Fitness Gym in Southern Pines on Friday, May 24.

Carthage Commissioners meet for budget review
The Carthage Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday to discuss plans regarding current and future projects, the fire department, and the town’s budget. Carthage Fire Chief Bryan Tyner joined the meeting to discuss approval for the fire department to begin “specking out” future trucks for its fleet.
Raeford man sent to prison for 2021 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Fayetteville girl
A Raeford man pleaded guilty last week to killing a 16-year-old Fayetteville girl when he opened fire during a fight among teenage girls at a city park in 2021. Jaylin Deshawn Covington, 24, of the 100 block of Joseph Street, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Hayle Genesis Miller, the record states. Covington was sentenced to between four years, nine months, and six years, nine months, in prison, according to court records. He was given credit for the 11 months he spent in jail before being released on $450,000 bail in September 2022.
DOT projects to begin in summer
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has several projects that will begin in the summer that will impact Moore County. Below are the major projects:. N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 — Road widening is planned on N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 in Aberdeen to Mockingbird Hill Road in Raeford. It will expand the route to a four-lane divided road. Work is wrapping up to acquire right of way, clear roadsides and move dry utilities. The road work is scheduled for the fall and is estimated to take multiple years to complete as it involves 16 miles of roadway.
