The Increasingly Long Drive to Give Birth in Rural America
For Chloe Freeman, the drive from her home in North Rose, New York, to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital is a familiar one: 25 minutes southwest, past farmland and apple orchards, to the labor and delivery unit where all three of her children were born. When Freeman had her first child there, at age 22, it was May 2020, only a few months into the Covid-19 pandemic. But Freeman and her husband weren't worried. State declares 'imminent jeopardy' to patients at Worcester nursing home
WORCESTER – The state's crackdown on an out-of-state nursing home operator is being felt in Central Massachusetts. State investigators slapped RegalCare at Worcester at 25 Oriol Drive with an imminent jeopardy designation that signals a subpar level of care that jeopardizes the health and safety of the nursing home's residents, according to a report in The Boston Globe . A resident with dementia reportedly wandered off from the facility and was later found by Worcester police at a restaurant and immediately sent to the hospital, the report said. Police didn't respond Oct. 22 to a request to confirm the report. State officials have barred RegalCare at Worcester from admitting more patients until its level of care improves. The facility didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The state Department of Public Health is moving to revoke New Jersey-based RegalCare's license to operate nursing homes in Massachusetts after reports of severe understaffing resulted in poor care and the diversion of nursing home revenues to the company's other businesses. RegalCare at Blackstone Valley, at 447 Hill St. in Whitinsville, is another of RegalCare's 12 nursing homes in Massachusetts that collectively serve about 1,300 residents. Khaled Sultani, the facility's administrator, didn't respond
