Hornets Division race ends early, with Farmville resident in Top 5

Things got a little crazy Saturday night in South Boston, as for the second straight time, the Hornets Division race was cut short. Last time, it was due to weather. This time around, there were what organizers called “an unusually large number of mishaps” on the track.

All total, the race was slowed by four cautions and stopped twice. Typically 20 laps, it was shortened to 17 and even that took an hour and six minutes to complete.

Taking the win was Ringgold resident Cameron Goble, who started on the pole and earned a flag-to-flag finish. Goble was among the top contenders last season but was plagued with mechanical issues with his car. So far this year, he’s picked up three wins.

Dustin Davis of Nathalie finished second, Jason DeCarlo of Chase City came in third and Farmville’s Max Sangillo came in fourth. This marks the second straight Top Five finish for Sangillo, as the Prince Edward County resident competes in his second full season on the circuit.

Last year involved a different kind of school for Sangillo, as he got used to racing in the Hornets Division. This time around, he has a new car and credits it with the move up in position each week.

“It’s been really different,” the Prince Edward High student said, speaking with the Herald earlier this month. “Upgrading from the Honda Civic to my current Acura RSX, there has definitely been a large change in my finishing positions.”

The Hornets Division will return to South Boston in a few weeks, for the Oak River Race Night. That’ll be on Saturday, June 8, with qualifying set for 6 p.m. Races will start at 7 p.m., with double 15-lap races for the Hornets Division set to go on last.

Farmville driver places in Late Model

Farmville also had a presence in the Late Model Division on Saturday. But first, it was two-time NASCAR national champion Peyton Sellers sweeping the double 65-lap races, becoming the fifth different winner in the division this season. Sellers passed Kyle Dudley of Roanoke for the lead with 10 laps remaining in the first 65-lap race and edged Dudley by .725-second to take the win in the opener.

There wasn’t much change up front in either race. The first of the two had one lead change and there were just three lead changes in the second race. But we mentioned a Farmville connection. That would be the driver claiming the Number Eight spot in the night’s Late Model Top 10. Farmville’s Toby Layne finished eighth on the night, his first Top 10 of the season.
