    Headlines in History 1920: First car produced in new Studebaker plant is shown

    What was making news in our area during this week in years past? The History Museum offers these newspaper excerpts to give you an idea.

    May 5, 1900: “Lack of material is causing a delay in the completion of improvements to the Michigan street route of the city electric railway. As soon as it arrives the work will be pushed to completion adding 2,700 feet on South Michigan street and the same number of feet on Portage avenue.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 6, 1912: “Four men bound for South Bend from their homes in Syria met death in the Titanic disaster, and now preparations are being made here for the filing of damage suits against the steamship company.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 7, 1920: “The Studebaker corporation has extended to the citizens of South Bend an invitation to inspect the Studebaker light six now on view in the administration building, at Main and Bronson streets, each day during the next two weeks, from 10 a.m. until noon, and from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The car on exhibition is No. 1, completed on Friday, April 30, 1920, — the first automobile produced in the new $15,000,000 Studebaker plant in South Bend.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 8, 1930: “The mammoth Sears, Roebuck & Co., industrial exposition which is to continue through Friday and Saturday in the company’s store at 429 South Michigan street and in a large tent west of the store, was formally opened before a large crowd this morning at 9 o’clock by Mayor W. R. Hinkle, who was introduced to the visitors by G. D. Davis, store manager, in the presence of a number of officials of the company.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 9, 1940: “Two Warner Bros. stars, Pat O’Brien and Donal Crisp, will visit the University of Notre Dame next week when scenes for “The Life of Knute Rockne” will be filmed. Mr. Crisp is expected in South Bend Monday and Mr. O’Brien will arrive Wednesday. It is planned that “shooting” will be completed so that the actors can return to Hollywood by Friday of next week.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 10, 1958: “Two liquor-dispensing establishments were visited Friday night by holdup men, one of whom robbed a bartender of $26. The other fled empty-handed when two deputy sheriffs put in an unexpected appearance.” — The South Bend Tribune

    May 11, 1962: “The Bendix Mishawaka Division of the Bendix Corp. has been awarded a new $1,925,000 contract for engineering services on the Typhon missile, it was announced today in Washington by U.S. Rep. John Brademas, 3rd District Democrat.” — The South Bend Tribune
