SOMERVILLE, NJ - Police Chief Dennis Manning and several officers paid tribute to five of their brothers for saving the life of a woman last summer who was bleeding profusely after her aortic artery had burst.

Manning and the Borough Council also welcomed two new officers who were sworn in during Monday night's Borough Council meeting.

The new police officers are Timothy Shaheed Black and Adam Jakub Shahat. Both will begin work May 13, and will be paid an annual salary of $69,531. Both are experienced New Jersey police officers. Black was formerly a police officer in East Orange, while Shahat served on the police force in Orange.

Manning thanked the five officers that responded to a 911 call reporting a woman bleeding at a store on Davenport Street. Each of the officers arrived separately, and worked as a team to apply tourniquets to retard the bleeding before members of the Somerville First Aid Squad responded, according to Manning. When she was stabilized, she was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was treated and released.

The officers had previously trained with the first aid squad on the proper application and procedures for the use of a tourniquet.

The back wall of the Council chambers was lined with more than one dozen police officers,
