In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, formally declaring the end of slavery in the United States. However, this monumental change did not happen overnight. It was nearly two and a half years later, on June 19th, 1865, that enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received the news of their freedom, delivered by Union army troops.

Police board to vote on ex-chief's disability pension after demotion, suspension
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Charleston Police Department Pension and Relief Fund board will vote next week on the former police chief's medical disability pension. In Sept. 2023, James "Tyke" Hunt was placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation by the Professional Standards Division. In April, Chief Scott Dempsey announced that the internal investigation had been closed, and Hunt had been demoted two ranks, from lieutenant to corporal.

West Virginia National Guard to celebrate the Army’s 249th birthday Friday
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Members of the West Virginia National Guard will celebrate the 249th birthday of the U.S. Army across the state on Friday. Public Information Officer Bo Wriston said the day will start with a U.S. Army tradition at the Capitol Complex in Charleston.
