    Recalled Candy Sold In Massachusetts Poses Major Risk Of Fatal Infection

    Palmer Candy Company of Sioux City, Iowa recalled their “White Coated Confectionary Items” on Sunday (May 5) due a possible Salmonella contamination. The United States Food and Drug Administration defines Salmonella as "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

    Symptoms of a Salmonella infection can include fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting among others . Serious conditions including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis can also occur as a result of infection.

    Recalled products include Caramel Swirl Pretzels 4oz, Favorite Day Bakery White Fudge Mini Cookies, Peanut Butter Snack Mix, Yogurt Pretzels, and more. The full list, along with expiration dates, can be found on fda.gov .

    The recalled items were recalled nationwide and were distributed to Walmart, HyVee, Target, Dollar General stores across the country. The contaminated ingredient in question likely came from one of Palmer Candy Company's suppliers. No illnesses or adverse side effects were reported as of Monday, May 6th.

    Officials have urged consumers to return any recalled White Coated Confectionary Items for a full refund and have warned against consuming them. Individuals with questions should contact the company at "1-800-831-0828 Monday through Friday 8am – 5pm."
