High school football: Mountain Ridge remains unbeaten in blowout victory over Herriman
Mountain Ridge won its eighth game of the season Friday night against Herriman, but blowing past the Mustangs 45-7 might have meant just a bit more than any other victory for the undefeated Sentinels. “It’s always good to beat an in-city rival,” Mountain Ridge head coach Nick Robins said. “You can pretend all you want about this game just being another game, but it’s not. “I’m just proud of our guys that they were ready to go and we won the game.” For one quarter it looked like the rivals were in for a close contest, but then the Sentinels exploded for 28 points in the second quarter, essentially putting the game out of reach before halftime. “They had some stuff that we weren’t ready for on film,” Robins said of the tight first quarter. “We just kind of adjusted to what they were doing.” The adjustments worked like a charm in a game that seemed pretty evenly matched, as the sides entered the night as the only unbeaten squads in Region 2, tied in the standings with 3-0 records. But that of course changed quickly, and Mountain Ridge’s win only adds to what has been its best ever record

Pioneer football upends unbeaten Mustangs on their field
The Lehi High School football team rode a fast start to a spectacular 22-20 upset of previously-undefeated and No. 3 Herriman on the road on Friday (Sept. 25). The Mustangs took the ball first and made a runback to their own 20-yard line. After a short ground gain on first down, they were backed up by a false start penalty and then a bad snap flew over the quarterback’s head and into the end zone for a safety just seconds into the contest.

University of Utah economics merger stokes fears of impending layoffs.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s coverage of looming University of Utah layoffs is critical of the decision. And why wouldn’t they be? The announced changes could affect nearly 900 staff members. To sprinkle additional salt in the wound, the decision comes with a $10 million price tag for outside consultants. Still, the Trib listened to the U’s claim that no faculty will be impacted. That claim has already been proven false. The University of Utah Economics Department has long been an indicator species for the school’s ideological freedom. It has endured as a hotbed of heterodox leftist theory since the ‘90s but, as of this year, will be rolled into the business school’s Division of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations (QAMO)—which favors a traditionally stale “analysis plus capital plus execution” take on the subject—forcing out some truly talented economists. The layoffs will undoubtedly mask other such academic reorganizations to ensure the U stays perfectly bland in all matters.
