Shreveport native Brent Gasaway, his wife Sharilyn and cousin Lance Gasawayare celebrating after the horse they co-own won the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Mystik Dan held off a late charge to win in front of 156,710 fans at Churchill Downs.

It was the first nose margin in a Derby since Grindstone beat Cavonnier in 1996.

"It is surreal, for sure," Sharilyn told the USA Today Network. "We feel like we're just ordinary people. We've got just an amazing horse that God gave us.

"I feel like this horse, (trainer) Kenny (McPeek) calls him 'an old soul,' because he's so chill. And if you watched him walking over to the paddock, he was so chill. Nothing spooks this horse."

Kenny, a graduate of Captain Shreve High School, now lives in Arkansas, where Oaklawn is their home track.

All three of Mystik Dan's races this year had been at Oaklawn: the Smarty Jones Stakes, the Southwest Stakes and the Arkansas Derby.
