SHELL LAKE — The Shell Lake school staff and students, combined with the Shell Lake Lions Club and other community organizations, celebrated Earth Day by joining forces to do some needed volunteer work around the city.

Lions Club member Deb Nebel, who’s also a member of the Shell Lake City Council, organized the effort after Shell Lake Community Education Director Keri Jensen reached out to her asking if she knew of any needs in the city.

“In the spirit of service, April 22 was selected as Community Service Day, a day for students and staff to lend a helping hand to the community of Shell Lake,” said Jensen. “Lakers could be found sprinkled through the town. You may have seen us helping the Lions Club with their spring cleaning at the Community Center, raking leaves at the campground, picking up litter from the beach, playing games or reading books at Glenview Assisted Living Center. We also, partnered with the Shell Lake State Bank to clean up Highway 63 and by raking gravel and fixing ruts in the Police Department parking lot. Students also hauled totes of books to storage for the Public Library, picking up trash and pulling weeds. What a beautiful day it was.”

In preparation for the upcoming summer season’s full agenda of events at the Community Center, Nebel coordinated with Jensen, along with Lions Club and City Council members, to do a thorough cleaning of the building.

“From my perspective, as I coordinated with Keri, it was so nice to see the school, city staff and Lions members working together. It was a great partnering with the school and I hope it will continue into the future,” Nebel said.

The Shell Lake Lions have also been supportive of the school by giving out scholarships to each graduating class. This year, seven scholarships totaling $8,000 were made by the club.

Deb Nebel organized the effort with SL city council, Lions and high school…….Eartyh Day. Keri Jensen with 15 kids from school to help celebrate Earth Day kj is community education director. Cleaning CC, windows outside cleanup, raking around the CC and campground, bathrooms.
