Major doughnut-and-coffee chain delays expanding in Brunswick

(This story has been updated to add new information.) A Massachusetts-based donut and coffee company has some delays in opening new locations in Brunswick County . With one location in Leland and another in Shallotte, three more Dunkins are slowly making their way to the area. There are only two existing Dunkin' locations operating in the county, one standalone Dunkin' in Leland and an in-store counter inside the Walmart Supercenter in Shallotte. County planning staff previously approved a standalone Dunkin' location at 4875 Long Beach Road SE, commonly known as N.C. 133, and another at 28 Blanton Road, Supply. The town of Carolina Shores approved plans for a third new location as well, to be constructed near the new Publix site. Construction is currently underway on the Long Beach Road location between a Food Lion-anchored retail area and Hampton Inn & Suites. The walls are up, but it is running behind schedule. Previous coverage: Major doughnut-and-coffee chain to open two more Brunswick stores Both the Supply and Southport area locations are owned by Dunkin' franchisee George Ross and will be completely new builds, former Senior Public Relations Specialist Julia Voutour previously told the StarNews. BJ's Wholesale Club eyes a new location in Horry County. Here's what we know

A popular northeastern wholesale supermarket chain is looking to expand into North Myrtle Beach after opening its first Grand Strand location last year. BJ’s Wholesale Club submitted development plans to the City of North Myrtle Beach for a new location between Champions Boulevard and South Carolina Highway 90. The proposal comes after the company opened its first Horry County store in Myrtle Beach in February 2025. The warehouse chain uses a club system where only members shop in its stores, similar to Costco or Sam’s Club. BJ’s is based in Massachusetts and, according to its website, BJ’s has 8.5 million members across its 270 stores in 22 states. The Sun News was unable to reach the company for comment, but preliminary plans submitted to North Myrtle Beach reveal some details about the proposed location. The building would be around 106,628 square feet, including a 3,400-square-foot tire service area, with 381 parking spaces. The rendering also describes signage for a gas station.

Born 94 Years Ago Today in the Tar Heel State, the Golden-Era Honky-Tonk Star Mentored by Ernest Tubb Who Made Grand Ole Opry History

On this day (November 6) in 1932, Stonewall Jackson was born in Tabor City, North Carolina. Stonewall wasn’t a nickname or stage name. Instead, he was named after the famed Confederate General. However, his name is far from the least interesting thing about him. He was the first artist to join the Grand Ole Opry without a record deal. Jackson also toured with his mentor, Ernest Tubb, until he landed his first chart hit. Decades later, he sued the Opry for discrimination and won.
