SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – Governor Mike DeWine is expected to sign House Bill 250 into law Wednesday, making cell phone restrictions mandatory in public schools across Ohio.

Many school districts are already creating their own policies.

Shaker Heights began discussions last year and held another community meeting Tuesday night.

They say studies show students can get over 100 notifications each day and that the mere presence of smart phones diminishes their attention.

Under the proposed plan, younger students 5th grade and below would keep them powered off in their backpacks. Older students would secure phones in Yondr pouches until the end of the day.

“We’re really looking at this as a wellness initiative. We are seeing impact on students’ mental health and also teachers’ ability to teach and students’ ability to learn,” said Dr. Felicia Evans, Shaker Heights director of school leadership.

“If everyone else doesn’t have their phones, then I feel like I’m not missing out on too much,” said student Bahji Jenkins.

“I really do think everybody not having their phones is a benefit because no on has access to anything,” said parent Martinique Future.

According to a survey, in Shaker Heights, more than 60% of students and most parents support restrictions.

Once the policy is finalized, it will be implemented next school year.
