Mom gives birth at Pittsburgh-area restaurant day before Mother's Day
GREENSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) -- A new mom is recuperating at home after a very unexpected, though happy, early Mother's Day surprise. The mom went into labor 10 days early in the middle of a Westmoreland County buffet restaurant. Let's set the scene: It's the day before Mother's Day and a young expectant mom just wanted to enjoy a meal at New City Buffet in Greensburg. While she had over a week until her due date, the baby she was carrying didn't want to wait and ended up being born right there in the middle of the restaurant with lots of help...

I ate my way through Pittsburgh's doughnuts — here are the best ones
At its (hollow) core, a doughnut is a deeply personal thing. When I think of an exceptional doughnut, it must check off certain technical criteria, sure — the flavor needs to be right, the fry has to be delicate but still perceptible, the texture should be airy for yeast doughnuts and moist for cake — but it also has to feel right. Does it elevate my morning coffee? Will it make a coworker’s day? Do I feel like I’ve been treated to something delightful, or merely consumed something sweet, but forgettable?
"Love Your Wild Neighbor" mural debuted on the South Side
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A new mural has been unveiled on the South Side with the goal of pushing protections for wildlife in Western Pennsylvania. The new mural is called "Love Your Wild Neighbor" and it was commissioned by Humane Action Pittsburgh. It shares the same name with a Humane Action Pittsburgh campaign that aims to educate community members on ways to coexist with the animals that also call our region home. Local artist Jeremy Raymer was called to paint the mural. It can be seen in the parking lot of the corner of East Carson and South 28th Streets. The mural comes out at a time when bear and other animal sightings have been on the rise as the weather gets nicer. Recently, KDKA's John Shumway spoke with a former Game Commission officer about those furry friends. "Stay in the house, pull out your phone, and start taking a video [and] take some pictures. Consider yourself lucky that you actually saw a black bear," he said. You can read the full story right here!

Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh hosts second annual Barks and Brews event
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The east side of Pittsburgh was the place to be on Saturday when the Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh hosted its second annual Barks and Brews event. HARP used the event as a way to bring more attention to the animal rescue and Saturday's event featured a handful of local breweries and food trucks from local restaurants. It also included plenty of chances to meet some of HARP's adoptable pets all the while learning about the important work the rescue does in the Pittsburgh community. "We have 9 breweries here, a few food trucks, but again lots of people coming out, we've managed to escape the raindrops, so folks are having fun, but again also learning about all the work Humane Animal Rescue does and raise some money to help continue those programs," said Michele Frennier Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh's Director of Marketing. If you were unable to make the event yesterday, HARP said there are still plenty of ways to donate, volunteer, and even adopt a new furry friend. You can learn more on their website at this link.
