Walmart’s Cullman Distribution Center modernization continues with $29.5M permit

CULLMAN, Ala. – Walmart’s multiyear modernization of its Cullman Distribution Center continues, with a building permit valued at approximately $29.55 million issued this summer for work at the south Cullman facility. The July 23 permit lists Walmart as the project owner, MYCON General Contractors Inc. as the contractor and 2200 Seventh Ave. SW as the project address. The permit is the latest substantial construction activity associated with the distribution center during Walmart’s ongoing $350 million modernization of the Cullman operation. Walmart announced the broader project in June 2023, describing plans to introduce robotics, automation and software systems intended to substantially increase the amount of merchandise the regional distribution center can process. The Cullman City Council approved a tax abatement associated with the project in 2023. At the time, Cullman Economic Development Agency officials described the $350 million commitment as the largest single capital investment announced in Cullman County’s history. The facility opened in 1983 and had approximately 1,300 employees when the modernization was announced, according to information provided to The Tribune at the time. City economic development officials said Walmart expected to retrain employees as new technology was introduced rather than reduce the facility’s workforce as a result of automation.
