St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to repair the fractured arm he suffered earlier this week. He was forced to exit Tuesday night's game against the New York Mets (NYM-STL GameTracker) in the second inning after J.D. Martinez's swing caught him on the left forearm. Soon after the Cardinals announced that Contreras had suffered a left arm fracture. After the game, Contreras told reporters that he was informed he would be out at least six to eight weeks.

Sewald was not available to pitch Wednesday when Joe Mantiply picked up the save in a 4-3 win over the Reds, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Fresh off a six-week stay on the injured list due to an oblique injury, Sewald returned Tuesday and threw 15 pitches in his season debut in a non-save situation. He was then bypassed for a save opportunity Wednesday, as manager Torey Lovullo stuck with Kevin Ginkel, then Mantiply after Ginkel allowed a walk and two singles. The manager is bringing Sewald back at a measured pace.

Rodriguez is close to being able to begin a throwing program after an MRI on Wednesday showed healing in his left shoulder, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Rodriguez has been sidelined all season and had to be shut down from throwing in mid-April after he felt renewed tightness in his shoulder. However, it appears the recent period of rest did him some good, and he's almost ready to ramp things back up again. The left-hander is still likely at least a month or so away from being able to join the Diamondbacks' rotation.

Carroll went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Reds. Carroll delivered the go-ahead run on a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning, a half inning after the Reds plated three runs to tie the game. The outfielder returned to the top of the order this week after a season-opening slump dropped him to the lower third in late April. He's worked through the slow start, which he attributed to a flat swing, per Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Carroll has a pop-up rate of 15.2 percent on the season, more than double than what it was in 2023 (7.3 percent).
