Searcy elementary school launches new bike program

SEARCY, Ark. – Searcy students are hitting the pavement with a brand-new skill, taking their physical education on the go.

Thanks to the non-profit organization All Kids Bike, a learn-to-ride kindergarten bike program was unveiled at Sidney Deener Elementary School on Monday morning.

Students were surprised with 24 balance-to-pedal training bikes, helmets and everything they need to go from stationary to rubber on the road.

School leaders say this is a game changer for their kindergarten classes, teaching a new generation of kids a skill many have yet to learn.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was there to help unveil the program.

“We will get to see thousands of kids across Arkansas learn how to ride a bike and encourage them to get outside and do so safely,” Sanders said. “We’re so excited about this program and seeing more and more kids getting outdoors.”

Sidney Deener Elementary P.E. teacher David Brooker feels this will open new opportunities for students.

“Some kids are not as fortunate as others and they don’t get the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike or even get one,” Brooker said. “So, hopefully, this is something where they can learn it and if they have the opportunity to get one, that’s not something that they quit.”

Sidney Deener is just one of 12 Arkansas elementary schools that will eventually implement the bike program.
