New tool shows where flood waters might go in Santa Cruz

The UC Santa Cruz Center for Coastal Climate Resilience is rolling out a tool that lets planners and property owners see what areas may be flooded by the end of the century. “For the first time we're able to pull these risk metrics and risk reduction metrics at the building-block level, so an individual homeowner will be able to scroll in and see their individual property and what is at risk there,” said Borja Gonzalez Reguero, leader of the CoSMoS Adapts project.

Alvarado Street Brewery unveils its 'forever home'

A new chapter for one of Monterey County's business success stories begins this weekend with the grand opening of Alvarado Street Brewery's new 32,000-square-foot facility in Castroville, a major expansion the brewery is calling its "forever home." The brewery, which owner and head brewer JC Hill started as a homebrew operation less than 20 years ago, is moving the bulk of its beer production and packaging to Castroville, where the operations will share space with a new tasting room. "This is our new forever home where we will make the vast majority of our beer," said Hill during an interview earlier this week. Known as "The Plant," the new facility will become the company's primary production facility and headquarters. The new location will be Alvarado Street Brewery's largest in the Monterey Bay area. Its production facility on Dayton Street in Salinas has largely wound down, Hill said, yet the tasting room there remains in operation. Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro located in the Carmel Plaza, showcases some of the brewery's more experimental and German-forward beers. Bay Area approved saving public transit, but how much will it cost you

Bay Area voters approved two transit tax measures in the 2026 general election, adding new costs for residents in five counties while funding BART, Muni, Caltrain, and other transit systems. How much more will residents pay? It depends on where they live. The Regional Transit Measure will impose a 14-year sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. San Francisco will add a 1% sales tax, while the other four counties will add 0.5%. San Francisco voters also approved Proposition H, a 15-year property tax to fund the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. Here's more about the two measures, how each Bay Area county voted, and how the new taxes will affect residents in each county. Regional Transit Measure and Proposition H explained The Regional Transit Measure will create a 14-year, five-county sales tax in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, expected to generate about $980 million annually as a new revenue source for the region's transit system.
