SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- A fire at a building under demolition on E. Second St. between Myrtle Ave and Park Ave closed traffic on the artery around 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire officials said that the building, the former home of The Bike Stand, was in the process of being demolished when sparks from blow torches landed on dried wood and caught ablaze.

Scotch Plains firefighters had the fire under control in about 45 minutes, according to officials. The activity impacted school pick up for parents whose children attend nearby Nettingham Middle School and School One.

Workers escaped safely, and no one was injured. Crews were seen continuing with the demolition after the fire was extinguished. Scotch Plains police and Union County first responders also assisted at the scene of the fire.

It was a busy day for Scotch Plains firefighters, as they also fought a fire on Tussel Lane near the Clark border off Lake Ave. in the morning hours.
