The 22nd Scappoose Farmers Market season is underway.

Throughout the spring and summer months, visitors will be treated to not only veggies and fruits, but a wide range of hand-crafted products, many of them locally produced.

The all-volunteer market is set up across from city hall and the police station. It opened Saturday, May 4, and will run through Sept. 28. Saturday hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Situated next to Heritage Park, the market offers nursery plants, herbs, flowers, food, jams, jellies, honey, freeze dried products and a lot more.

“You’ll find a lot of stuff there,” market manager Bill Blank said, noting the market does not consist simply of growers, but also crafters and bakers. You can find anything from wooden tables to earrings. “It’s what keeps us moving around and surviving as a market.”

One popular vendor comes from Canby, Blank said.

“We have a farmer who brings in veggies, but also brings in bouquets of cut flowers,” he said. “She has been doing this for years. She is probably one of our more popular vendors.”

While many of the products are crafted locally, some goods are sourced from other parts of the region.

“We have one vendor that lives in Estacada and loves the market so well that she drives over here," Blank said.

The Scappoose Farmers Market is a hit with all age groups, and even welcomes four-legged family members.

“Some markets don’t have it, but we have always allowed animals, whatever, to come in, as long as they are on a leash,” he said. “We haven’t had a problem. It’s one of the joys of watching the interaction of people. They bring their dogs, they stop, they talk.”
