Sayreville Man Accused of Killing His Son Pronounced Dead

Manuel Rivera, the Sayreville man accused of killing his 9-year-old son, Christian Rivera, on March 28, 2025, has died.

SAYREVILLE, NJ -- Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Daniel Plumacker of the Sayreville Police Department announced today that Manuel Rivera, 43, of Sayreville, was pronounced deceased today, April 17, 2024, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Rivera was charged with Aggravated Arson, Murder, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Desecration of Human Remains after police found the body of his 9-year-old son inside a car that had been set ablaze near Sayreville War Memorial High School on the evening of March 28, 2024.

Sayreville police responded to a call reporting a domestic dispute and later found the burned out car at Washington Road, near the rear entrance of the high school. Rivera was found alive with burns to his body and a self-inflicted wound. The vehicle next to him had been doused with gasoline and set on fire.

Rivera was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University, where he remained in critical condition until his death.
