SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students have begun occupying a new 17-story dormitory located near Plant Riverside, marking a significant addition to the city’s skyline. The towering structure, visible upon crossing the Talmadge Bridge, has stirred mixed reactions among locals and students alike.

While some students praise the modern amenities and sleek design of the dormitory, others express concerns that it clashes with Savannah’s historic aesthetic. Tariell Anderson, a junior at SCAD, voiced his preference for buildings with classical influences, stating, “I feel like it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.”

The dormitory, touted to offer suite-style living for four students, features various facilities including lounge spaces, dining halls, and a market. The cost to live in the dorms for one academic year for a full-time student is $40,095. The modern design has attracted scrutiny, with some questioning its compatibility with Savannah’s historical charm.

Lexi Grant, a freshman at SCAD, sees the building’s design as reflective of the student population it accommodates. “I think it fits the generation of our school as well,” she remarked, highlighting its location adjacent to the bridge.

According to the Chatham County Board of Assessors, the building holds a market value of $26.7 million and is tax-exempt for the 2024 tax year under an education-related property exemption.

Efforts to obtain comments from SCAD regarding the building’s design and the concerns raised have yet to yield a response.
