    Headliner announced for ‘Belmont on Broadway’ concert

    SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) – Officials celebrated “Belmont on Broadway” on Wednesday, a week-long event that will kick off with a concert on June 5. Blues Traveler was announced as the headlining act for the free, family-friendly concert which will take place on Broadway.

    Officials were full of anticipation for one of the biggest sporting events to come to the Capital Region. Saratoga Race Course will host the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, in just over one month.

    “We’re ready for this and we’re continuing to improve all of our plans. it’s gonna be an exciting, safe family-oriented week and we’re excited,” said Safford.

    Mayor John Safford said they want to capitalize on the opportunity, that’s why Broadway will be closed off between city center and Van Dam St. for the concert on Wednesday June 5. They expect 5,000 – 10,000 people will attend “Belmont on Broadway.”

    Horse racing in New York state brings in more than $2 billion annually and Saratoga Springs is looking to cash in on that. They estimate the economic impact could be upwards of $50 million dollars.

    Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus said safety is paramount and business owners were briefed by the Saratoga Police Department this morning.

    “They’re working with the FBI, Homeland Security, State Police, Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and they did a presentation this morning for downtown businesses so that everybody can be eyes and ears on Broadway to make sure that everything goes well,” said Shimkus.

    Three months until Belmont Stakes race in Saratoga

    He said tickets are still available for races on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

    “You can still get hotel rooms. You can still get to your favorite restaurant. You can still watch the racing and you can have some fun with us in our downtown,” said Shimkus.

    Discover Saratoga President Darryl Leggieri echoed that.

    “I’d ask people to just check in and call in and make sure because it’s not sold out there’s still availability left,” said Leggieri.

    Saratoga prepares for 2024 Belmont Stakes

    This weekend, Universal Preservation Hall is one of many locations throughout Saratoga that will broadcast the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown.
