The zoning amendment was first discussed in March and returned this summer for a second reading, but was tabled until trustees could consider an ordinance on keeping residential chickens. During an Oct. 1 meeting, the items were tabled again after debate over whether backyard chickens should be allowed in some single-family neighborhoods. The zoning amendment would allow chickens at single-family dwellings in AG Agricultural, R-1 Low Density Residential and R-2 Moderate Density Residential districts. Chickens would remain prohibited in R-2A Medium Density Residential and R-3 High Density Residential districts. Under the proposal, properties zoned R-1 or R-2 would require a three-year permit. Chickens would need to be kept as a food source for eggs or meat, and outdoor slaughter would be prohibited. It would require chickens to be kept in a covered enclosure and remain within that enclosure or an adjoining
