Construction underway for new hotel in Holland
Construction is officially underway on a new 119-room hotel in Holland, with the project targeting completion in late 2027 and a grand opening in early 2028. Tru by Hilton Holland South is being built at 620 S. Point Hotel Drive, just off M-40, on Holland's southeast side. The project received site plan approval from the city's planning commission Dec. 9. Earlier plans called for a 115-room hotel at a different address. "The official address is 620 S. Point Hotel Drive," said Robb Carter, vice president of operations for Hospitality Specialists Inc. "In the early stages, 621 was what we thought the address would be, but when the city separated the land, it became officially 620." Final plans call for a 119-room hotel with a 2,800-square-foot social hub for working, dining and lounging. The space will include table games and a pool table. Amenities will include complimentary hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi, an indoor pool, a 24/7 fitness center and pet-friendly accommodations. An on-site retail area will offer snacks, beverages, beer and wine. The new hotel comes from the same property group that owns the neighboring Residence Inn and the same-site Homewood Suites Hotel: Holland Hotel II LLC. Representatives previously told local

The Art of Building an Online Business
Let’s travel back in time for a moment, shall we, to the year 2000. You may remember such joys as dial-up internet (though broadband was in its infancy), AOL and the controversy over Napster. This is also the year Rod and Heidi Grasman shipped their first plants from online sales.

Gezellig new owner looks to carry on legacy in downtown Holland
Downtown Holland retailer Gezellig is under new ownership, but Heather Scholma plans to continue the existing mission and offerings the store is known for. Scholma took ownership of the business, 188 S. River Ave., in early September. She described Gezellig as a modern gift shop with a vintage heart that continues to look for unique offerings from small artisans. Scholma, who grew up in Hudsonville, said owning a small business had been a goal for years. When she came across the listing for Gezellig, she was "blown away" by the opportunity. “I didn’t know if the timing was right but I just couldn’t shake the idea and so I started pursuing it," she said. Scholma said the transition has gone smoothly, crediting the store’s staff for helping her navigate the change. “Their energy and love for this place is just contagious and has been so fun,” she said. “It is such a gift and I’m grateful for what they bring to this place.” As the business moves forward, Scholma said customers shouldn't expect major changes. “I think staying the course is the key,” Scholma said. “We are committed to honing our craft." The Business Next Door: How Dutch immigrants built a business empire (The DePrees II)
The story of D.J. DePree is one of my favorites because it demonstrates the importance of management philosophy and assumptions about people and design. In Part I, I noted that Jan DePree was one of the first Dutch patriarchs in Zeeland, and that his descendants were among its most ethical and entrepreneurial. Among them, I highlighted Peter Henry DePree (DePree Hardware) and Cornelius (Con) DePree (DePree Chemical). This week, I share the story of D.J. DePree, the initial force behind Herman Miller.
