SANDUSKY, Ohio (WWJ) — Only about a week after opening, Cedar Point’s Top Thrill 2 has been shut down to undergo a “mechanical modification.”

Cedar Point officials announced on Facebook Sunday morning that Top Thrill 2 is “experiencing an extended closure” as Zamperla, the ride’s manufacturer, does the modification.

Officials did not say exactly what prompted the closure.

“Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance & operations teams and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride,” Cedar Point said in Sunday’s statement.

Park officials have not confirmed a reopening date for the ride, but will provide updates on the Cedar Point website.

“We know our guests are excited to experience this incredible roller coaster, and we share your disappointment that we are not able to operate it this weekend. We will do everything possible to reopen Top Thrill 2 as soon as we are confident we can deliver the ride experience that our guests deserve,” the statement said.

The “strata” coaster — any roller coaster eclipsing the height of 400 feet — was initially known as Top Thrill Dragster, which was "retired" in fall of 2022 after a Michigan woman was seriously injured by a piece of metal from the ride a year prior.
