Alumni and Fans push grassroots NIL Collective
, The M&G Collective signed 20 Texas State football players to Name, Image and Likeness deals. Offensive lineman Nash Jones is one of the players who will see the benefits. “To me it’s super important,” Jones said. “It helps me out on a day to day standpoint, not worrying about food, groceries and things of that nature. It also makes me feel important to the team knowing that my coaches are trying to help me orchestrate these things.” The M&G Collective is run and operated by the Texas State fan website Maroon and Golden with the board members consisting of Justin Shaffer,...
Exploring Nature: Peanuts
, Let us depart from topics of nature and consider something that has given me a great deal of enjoyment — newspaper comic strips. Down through the years, I have perused lots of different strips, ranging from Major Hoople and the Katzenjammer Kids to Mary Worth and Gasoline Alley; all long gone. Also departed and sorely missed are Pogo, Smiling Jack and the Phantom. But one comic seems to go on forever. I refer to “Peanuts,” a feature which first appeared under that name in November 1950, in seven newspapers. It eventually inspired television specials and would run in more than 2,600...
Council offers new incentives for grocery store development
Any local can tell you that grocery shopping seems to take longer than it used to. As has been reported in regional media outlets, residents say that there are just not enough grocery stores for the rapidly growing population in San Marcos. It seems the San Marcos City Council agrees. At the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, the council created an incentive package for grocery stores to entice that type of development. San Marcos Economic and Business Development Manager Christian Smith said staff recommended grocery store incentives that included a property and sales tax abatement of 100% for the first year, 80%...
Martindale to celebrate Model-T’s 100th birthday, host Bicycle Rodeo on May 18
, Ford Motor Company’s Model Ts were the first mass-produced automobiles in the United States, the vehicle that put Americans on wheels in the early 20th Century. Manufactured between 1908 and 1927, all remaining Model T vehicles are either over a 100 years old or nearing that century mark. Henry, a 1923 Model T, has lived in a barn in downtown Martindale since it was acquired and restored by long-time Austin contractor and frequent Martindale visitor Joe Pinnelli in 2007. Since Henry is passing this important milestone, Pinnelli is inviting everyone to come out and celebrate on Saturday, May 18 from...
Colton’s Corner: Texas State should fight against the split
In 2012 Texas State made the jump to Football Bowl Subdivision joining the Western Athletic Conference before finding their home in the Sun Belt Conference. The reason for the jump was simple. After 27 years playing Football Championship Subdivision, this was the goal the university wanted to achieve dating back as 2000. Playing at the FBS level meant your university was on par with Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU and SMU. It also meant that the university was now going to have more exposure on television with games on the ESPN linear channels, which theoretically meant more people would now know...
Keeping your exercises simple and effective
Running and walking are some of the easiest and best activities to participate in for fitness. Almost anybody can do these activities, and one of the best things about giving it a try for the first time is that not much equipment is needed. A good pair of walking or running shoes is about the only equipment to buy if you want to have a comfortable beginning. Later in the program you might try for some exercise clothes that allow comfort in moving without any restrictions in the legs or arms. While the objective in walking or running, or any exercise,...

Texas State loses to Troy following disastrous seventh inning
A diasterous 7th inning proved to be the difference maker in the Bobcats 5-3 loss to the No. 21 Troy Trojans. It was a frustrating loss for the Bobcats and Head Coach Steven Trout who now fall to 25-26 overall and 11-15 in conference play. “Obviously we got off to a great start and Drayton Brown threw the ball really well,” Trout said. “Other than that we just fell apart in that one inning. We gave up too many walks and pretty much [Troy] didn’t earn the win. We just handed it to them. That’s the frustrating part.” The Bobcats got on the...
Bobcats stun South Alabama on walk off homer to win twice in one day
Texas State had the envious task of needing to win two games in the same day in order to play for the Sun Belt Championship on Saturaday. Needless to say, the Bobcats hit it out of the park. Literally. The Bobcats defeated the Marshall Thundering Herd 8-2 in the Sun Belt Quarterfinals before pulling off a 4-3 comeback win over the South Alabama Jaguars in the Sun Belt Semifinals when second baseman Katarina Zarate hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. “It’s a senior led team but everyone does their job and that is what makes it fun,” Head...

SMCISD receives recommendations for employee compensation
Retaining employees is an essential part of any organization, and school districts are no different. Amy Campbell, Texas Association of School Boards Human Resources Services director, gave a presentation on employee compensation and recommended possible changes at the special San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District board meeting Monday. “We collect a lot of your data, and we’re matching that to market data and peer information,” Campbell said. “We talk with district staff and district administrators at the beginning to find out what’s working well — we want to protect stuff that’s working well — and find out what’s not working well,...
'We lost everything'
East Texas residents confront their future after flooding Clinton Jones looked across the emergency shelter Friday. His children were going stir crazy. His wife, Samantha, and mother-in-law, Lee Farrell, were making the best of the cots and blankets they received from the Red Cross. The 27-year-old’s family was one of thousands who fled their Southeast Texas homes as heavy rains saturated land in multiple counties and filled lakes and streams. An unknown total of homes, businesses and other property has been ' damaged this week by unrelenting storms stretching across Polk, Montgomery, Harris and other counties. ' We lost everything.
