( KRON ) — A San Jose man was killed after he crashed his car into a big rig while driving the wrong way on US 101 on Friday, California Highway Patrol said.

Multiple lanes of the highway were blocked for several hours after the crash, and 100 gallons of fuel spilled on the roadway.

The crash happened at about 11:15 a.m. just north of Blossom Hill Road. CHP said a Honda sedan was driving northbound in the southbound lanes, directly at the big-rig tractor-trailer.

The driver of the big rig attempted to swerve, but the vehicles collided head-on. The Honda spun out and stopped in the center median, and its driver was ejected and killed. CHP said the deceased is a 22-year-old man from San Jose but did not provide his name.

The big rig was significantly damaged, and the San Jose Fire Department and Caltrans worked to clean the spilled fuel.

Authorities are unsure if drugs or alcohol played a factor in this crash. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP at (408) 961-0900.
