5 Best Restaurants in Clovis, California You Need to Try Before Everyone Else Finds Them
Clovis, California — a city where the Sierra foothills roll gentle and golden, where the air is sweet with the scent of orange blossoms and the laughter of families echoes from shaded porches. Here, the streets are stitched with memory and migration, from old-town brick facades to the new neighborhoods where dreamers plant roots. Clovis is a patchwork — of ranchers and teachers, of Hmong and Hispanic families, of students, artists, and old-timers who remember when the rodeo was the biggest show in town.

Empty for years, a north Fresno grocery gets a new renter. Who is it? Why the delay?
After seven years of sitting empty, the former Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins and Bentley’s Fresh Market in North Fresno finally has a new renter. But it’s not another grocery store — and there’s a reason for that. Mulligan’s Sports Bar & Indoor Golf is taking over the spot at the RiverView Shopping Center at Friant and Fort Washington Roads. It’s a bar and restaurant with golf simulators that has an existing location on Visalia’s Main Street. It’s expected to open in January or February. It’s planned to have eight golf simulators where customers can swing a club in front of large screens showing all kinds of golf courses. Also planned is a 40-person wrap-around bar with 16 taps. It will serve cocktails and specialize in whiskey. Though it will have a sports bar-style menu , you can order full dinners, including pizza, smashburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, and perhaps steak, said Shane Moss, the managing owner, who is opening the location with business partner Scott Wright. “You don’t have to golf to even come in,” he said, adding that some people try their hand at a game for the first time, while others just come to eat or drink. Is Starving Artists Bistro closed? What we know about the Fresno venue/restaurant
Starving Artists Bistro in north Fresno has been dark for a month. What’s happening with the popular restaurant, bar and live music venue at the RiverView Shopping Center at Friant and Fort Washington roads? The place that was just celebrating its reopening in January ? “They went out of business,” said Jimmy Zahriya, who owns the shopping center. He declined to speak further. Starving Artists owners could not be reached for comment about why. The business’s previous owner, who still played music at the site, also said he didn’t have any information to share. About a month ago, Starving Artists Bistro’s Instagram page posted that it was closing temporarily “due to operational challenges, business restructuring, and staffing limitations.” But temporary appears to have morphed into permanent. The business’s phone line has been disconnected. No one has posted on its Facebook account since Sept. 3. Starving Artists was the recipient of three temporary, four-month liquor licenses, the latest scheduled to expire in January, according to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Its 12-month regular and event liquor licenses are still listed as pending on the site. What was Starving Artists Bistro? The north Fresno business was unique. With guitars as

Why this restaurant's name is confusing people. Tacos El Gordo is now open in Fresno
The name of a new Fresno restaurant is causing some drivers to do a double take when they pass it. Tacos El Gordo opened in late September on Ashlan Avenue, next to Save Mart near Cedar Avenue. But it’s not that Tacos El Gordo. To explain, the Tacos El Gordo many people in central California are familiar with is the one that started in San Diego and has several locations in Las Vegas. One, on the Las Vegas Strip is open until 4 a.m. and has a huge rotating trompo in the window roasting meat for al pastor tacos. “That’s super popular,” customer Deron Walker of Fresno said. “There’s a lot of people (who) know it. It’s a whole experience.” Lines are separated by what meat customers want on their tacos . That’s not what opened in Fresno. Our Tacos El Gordo is a locally owned restaurant named after the owner who got the nickname El Gordo when he was working at all the Toledo’s Mexican Restaurants locations. Cashier Laura Contreras has fielded questions about the name. “We’re not associated with them at all,” she said. “I like to always say we’re better than them. That’s a strong statement, but

New Fresno food in October: Clovis matcha, Yemeni coffee, smashburgers and more
October loaded the Fresno food map with new openings worth lining up for — a Syrian-pastry cafe pulling 8,000 date lattes in two months, an L.A. matcha chain finally landing in Clovis, three Yemeni coffee shops expanding across town and the next move from the group behind Heirloom, Otherside and Saizon. Here’s the month at a glance, bookmark-ready. Rumi Coffee is the sleeper hit of the Northwood corner The foodie glow-up at Alluvial and Fresno Street is real. Rumi Coffee opened in July from the owner of Fabiano Coffee Roasters, serving Syrian baklava, tiny edible birds nests, fig labneh toast and lattes built around cardamom, rose water and orange blossom. The top seller: a golden date latte with date syrup that drinks like caramel. “I don’t think anyone else has a date latte in Fresno,” owner Hamed Alghazali said. The shop sold 8,000 in two months. Same corner: Dumpling U , the TikTok-viral soup dumpling spot that opened in January and still pulls crowds for its hand-folded xiao long bao and beef rolls. House of Kebab just added a Greek street-food section with slab-of-feta Greek salads, a no-bake “lazy cake” and hummus topped with filet mignon. Yemeni coffee is officially

This Asian restaurant in Fresno is making big changes 8 years after it opened
For an authentic taste of Korea, a plane ticket isn’t needed. Fresno’s Asiana Korean Restaurant , at 90 E Magill Ave, Ste. 101, is just off Blackstone Avenue. It’s been around for 8 years, and owners Zhangjie Jin and his wife Mee Ryung make everything in-house. After eight years in business, they still make changes to the menu, but those changes always come down to two key points: What's popular in Korea, and what’s popular with their existing customer base. So while there are dishes that will never leave the menu, like galbi, bulgogi and japchae, the owners are also introducing a new dish to Fresno, malatang. The dish is a Chinese street food, where, like hot pot, people can select the ingredients they want to include and have those ingredients quick-boiled in a broth. At Asiana, customers can pick which ingredients they want to include from a self-service bar, as well as if they want the dish to be spicy (and what level of spice they might want), as well as if they want it to be a soup or dry. The ingredients are then weighed and paid for, and then Zhangjie takes the ingredients and prepares them. While
