SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — There is something about being in the presence of an old school atmosphere, especially while eating.

A diner is typically a small, informal, and inexpensive restaurant with an extensive menu and often made from or designed to resemble a modified railroad dining car, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Diners are a rare find in the United States, but there are a few in San Diego. Here are four retro diners to visit in the area:

    Rudford’s Restaurant
    2900 El Cajon Blvd.
The North Park diner has been in existence since 1949.

    Beginners Diner
    2223 El Cajon Blvd.
Fitting the vibe of The Lafayette Hotel where it is located, the interiors of the University Heights diner act as an installation of a traditional diner from the 1940s.

    Studio Diner
    4701 Ruffin Road
The chrome and blue neon colors outside of the diner screams a trip back to the 1940s. It can be found in the middle of the Kearny Mesa Business District,

    Corvette Diner
    2965 Historic Decatur Road
Known for its Rock n’ Roll vibe, burgers, shakes and sassy waitresses, the Liberty Station diner has been a San Diego landmark for over 35 years.
