Smith, he had this to say about gas prices:
“Here’s the thing with Iran and why I think it’s been a big drag. It was launched. He obviously ran saying he wasn’t going to do a Middle East war. They did. So we have some of our voters who’ve checked out because they’re like, ‘I didn’t want any more Middle East wars and now we’re doing it.’ Had that been wrapped up in like a week, like Venezuela was very quick. It probably wouldn’t have been an issue right now, right?”
DeSantis called the war an “open-ended conflict” that is affecting ordinary people’s finances, naming gas prices as an example. The former presidential candidate said that anyone who isn’t honest about the matter is “gaslighting” voters. He said:
“But what’s happened is, it’s kind of an open-ended conflict, and it’s having a direct impact on people’s finances. Gas is higher. It hurts people, working-class people, and it’s higher because of this conflict. That’s just a fact. If you can’t admit that to voters, then you’re gaslighting them, and they’re not going to listen to you on other things.

Ron DeSantis Talks About Trump Potentially Hurting Republicans’ Chances In The Midterms

DeSantis on the war (Image via Wikimedia Commons / Gage Skidmore)

In the same interview with Stephen A. FALLON / AFP / Getty Images

Oil prices dropped sharply Wednesday (November 4), reaching their lowest levels since October, as political shifts in the United States and hopes for easing tensions in the Middle East changed market expectations. According to The Wall Street Journal, front-month Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, fell 9.3% to $93.90 a barrel, while U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate decreased 8.8% to $87.61 a barrel. The price slide comes after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections. This political shift raised hopes for a quick settlement in the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, easing concerns about a possible escalation that had driven oil prices higher for months. CNBC reported that U.S. crude oil was nearly 9% lower, and Brent crude was down more than 9% by midday Wednesday.Vice President JD Vance publicly attributed Republican losses in the midterms to the ongoing war with Iran, stating on social media, "The reason we lost is the war." Analysts told CNBC that the election results may encourage Democrats to push President Donald Trump toward a diplomatic solution, potentially ending the war that has significantly impacted global energy markets.Oil prices had surged by more than 10% in October as traders anticipated a possible escalation in the conflict. However, futures have now fallen more than 14% this week as U.S. and Iranian officials signaled that they are open to diplomatic negotiations, according to CNBC. Energy trader Rebecca Babin told CNBC that the market reaction reflected uncertainty and emotion following the unexpected election outcome.According to Fortune, the price of oil is heavily influenced by global events, supply, and demand, and recent developments have shifted expectations for both.Looking ahead, analysts say that while the sharp drop in oil prices could bring relief to consumers at the gas pump, the situation remains fluid. Political decisions and further diplomatic or military actions could still impact oil markets in the coming weeks.

An Ohio ambulance driver abandoned their patient while they were being transported from Toledo to a clinic in Cleveland, according to a new report. Lema Tackett-Kuscmaul, 50, was being transported to Cleveland Clinic in a private LYNX ambulance before she was abandoned near a gas station around 8pm by the unnamed paramedic driving her on October 28.According to FOX 8, Tackett-Kuscmaul called 911 pleading for someone from the Cleveland EMS clinic to come pick her up. The woman explained to authorities that the paramedic driving the ambulance got lost when their GPS began leading them in circles. Tackett-Kuscmaul said the paramedic decided to get out of the ambulance and leave her and the other Lynx EMT in the back of the truck without an explanation. 'Please get someone out to help me. I’m begging you. She said she’s done driving. She said she’s taking an Uber. She’s leaving us,' Tackett-Kuscmaul said in the 911 call.'I was screaming. I was definitely screaming at the top of my lungs. The guy in the back with me was wondering where she is. They were trying to get me to take, I wanted the aspirin to keep me from having a heart attack and it’s like total chaos,' Tackett-Kuscmaul told FOX 8. Tackett-Kuscmaul told the outlet she was being transferred to the clinic to receive treatment for a spinal injury she suffered in June. She said she was unsure when she would be released from the hospital and return home.

Tackett-Kuscmaul revealed on the emergency call the bizarre moment the paramedic decided to get out of the ambulance and leave her and the other Lynx EMT in the back of the truck without an explanation. Source: Facebook/@Lynx EMS

Tackett-Kuscmaul told the outlet she was being transferred to Clevland Clinic from Toledo, Ohio to receive treatment for a spinal injury she suffered in June

The Cleveland Association of Rescue Employees (CARE) has since clarified that Cleveland Clinic EMS paramedics were not responsible for the incident. 'CARE is aware of several online articles that are circulating about the personnel who abandoned their patient. We want to clarify it was NOT a Cleveland EMS ambulance, but rather a provider working on a private ambulance,' a CARE spokesperson wrote in a Facebook statement. 'Once that provider left, Cleveland EMS responded to the scene, administered care, and transported the patient to the hospital,' the CARE spokesperson wrote. A Lynx EMS spokesperson told FOX 8: 'Patient safety and quality care are of the utmost importance to us and responsibilities we take very seriously.' 'Upon becoming aware of the situation, immediate steps were taken to address the matter and ensure the patient’s well-being and care needs were addressed,' a Lynx EMS spokesperson told the outlet. The spokesperson confirmed to the outlet that the circumstances around the incident are under review as the company decides what appropriate actions should be taken. They did not release any information on the status of the paramedic who left the ambulance.'We remain committed to providing high-quality care and maintaining the trust of our patients, their families, healthcare partners, and the communities we serve,' the Lynx EMS spokesperson told the outlet. Tackett-Kuscmaul wrote in a Facebook statement on October 26, only days before she was left stranded in the ambulance: 'Last 4 days have been roughest of my life there’s reasons I go to Cleveland clinic and Henry Ford!'

Tackett-Kuscmaul told FOX 8 that the overall experience was 'horrible' but praised the 911 operator who kept her on the phone the entire time while she was waiting for the Cleveland EMS crew to respond. Source: Facebook/@Lema Tackett

A Lynx EMS spokesperson told FOX 8 that the circumstances around the incident are under review as the company decides what appropriate actions should be taken but did not state the status of the paramedic responsible. Cleveland EMS Deputy Commissioner Chris Chapin told FOX 8 this was the first time he had ever encountered an incident call like this. 'I’ve been here for 31 years. I’ve never heard of that before. I would hope that our people would never be in a situation where this would happen to them, and if they did want to leave the job they would do it when nobody is in the ambulance,' Deputy Chapin told the outlet. Tackett-Kuscmaul told the outlet the overall experience was 'horrible' but praised the 911 operator who kept her on the phone the entire time while she was waiting for the Cleveland EMS crew to respond. She emphasized that everyone who stayed with her until she was securely transferred to the hospital were all 'wonderful.' Tackett-Kuscmaul has since released an update on her medical condition to her Facebook followers. 'Praise God Hallelujah after 33 days in the bed God has given me the precious strength walk I’m so blessed to be at Cleveland Clinic today I love you,' Tackett-Kuscmaul wrote in a social media statement. The Daily Mail has reached out to Lema Tackett-Kuscmaul, Cleveland EMS, CARE Local 1975 and Lynx EMS for comments.

A month earlier, refiners were paying up for any barrel that could load soon.Dated Brent is the price of physical North Sea cargoes loading in the next few weeks. ICE Brent futures are contracts for later delivery. In early October, Dated traded $30 a barrel above futures, and by November 3, 2026, that premium had shrunk to roughly $3.70 a barrel. The weakness sits in the discounted grades and the spreads. Dated Brent itself was still above $108 a barrel on November 2, so the outright price of physical oil remains high.Futures still carry a war premium, and United States Oil Fund (NYSEARCA:USO) holds those futures. USO rose 0.82% to $158.15 on November 3, even as WTI settled lower. Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) fell 1.23% to $177.46, and Chevron (NYSE:CVX) slid 1.10%. What the Physical Market Is Saying A key North Sea grade offered at more than $20 above Dated a few weeks earlier reportedly fell to a $1.40 discount on November 2. Kazakhstan's CPC Blend hit its largest discount in 14 years, and 10 to 15 Nigerian cargoes for November loading were still unsold as of October 30.On October 30, North Sea sellers cut offers to between Dated plus $1.45 and Dated plus $5.75, including Trafigura's Forties at Dated plus $2.15, and reportedly found no buyers. Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) trader Peter Hackworth put it this way: "Needless to say this does NOT suggest a tight market." Why Gulf Barrels Are Flooding Back Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq and Kuwait raised combined October exports 10% to more than 15 million barrels a day, and Aramco says it will maximize production this quarter.Dubai slid into contango, meaning nearby barrels cost less than later ones, with November about $2 a barrel below December for the first time since July. Freight also matters, because shipping costs running about four times pre-war levels were called the main driver of weak West African differentials in early October. Why Futures Have Not Followed January Brent settled at $103.60 on November 3, down 1.1%, after a 7.63% drop on November 2. December WTI settled at $96.09, its weakest close since October 14.Goldman Sachs raised its December Brent forecast to $105 from $90. But it estimates a war-risk premium of about $27 a barrel that "now explains most of October's crude price rally," and its base case sees prices falling below the forwards if that premium fades. Risks That Could Revive the Rally Although the war continues, Trump said, "We're locked and loaded if we need to go, but there may be no reason for it," while a senior Iranian official said the two sides remain far from a deal.On the evening of November 3, an unknown tanker was hit by two projectiles 14 nautical miles northeast of Limah, Oman. Hormuz flows ran 11.7 million barrels a day in October, down from about 14.5 million barrels a day before the war, and Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said, "So, no, it is not at pre-conflict level yet." What Could Pressure USO Next USO trades far closer to its 52-week high of $171.82 than its low of $65.99, and its price rests on a futures war premium that the cash market is already discounting.USO also carries roll risk. If WTI follows Dubai into contango, the fund loses value each time it swaps expiring contracts for pricier ones.Exxon offers different exposure because its refining and chemicals businesses can benefit when crude costs ease. Its third-quarter adjusted EPS of $4.23 beat the $3.981 consensus, largely on refining strength. The bearish case for USO weakens if it closes above $171.82 while the Dated premium widens back toward its early-October level.
Got $1,000? Physical Oil Just Went From a Bidding War to a Fire Sale

Whether your winter heating bill goes up or down may depend on a single question. What fuel does your furnace burn?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration released its winter outlook on October 6, and the answer splits American homes into winners and losers. The agency’s press release lays out why households that burn oil are in for a rougher season.
Gas And Propane Homes Spend Less
The EIA expects households that heat with natural gas or propane to spend less than last winter. Homes with electric heat are expected to spend more. For many households, that tilt comes down to what they cannot easily change. You cannot swap your furnace in a week.
Heating Oil Is The Hard Hit
About 3% of households heat with oil, and the agency says they will pay about 21% more. Inventories of distillate fuel on the East Coast are 32% below the five-year average.Diesel averaged $6.29 in September, a sign of how tight the supply is.
Electricity Is Getting Costlier Too
Wholesale electricity prices are around $52 per megawatt hour, up 11%. Homes that depend on electric heat feel that more than others.
Ways To Lower A Fuel Bill
If you use oil, ask your supplier about fixed-price or capped plans before the cold hits. Compare quotes from more than one company.Fill your tank before the coldest weeks, if your budget allows, so you are not buying during a price spike.
Know Your Heating Type

Natural gas: delivered by pipe, billed monthly.

Propane: delivered by truck, often under a contract.

Heating oil: delivered by truck, priced by the gallon.

Electric: billed monthly, rate depends on your utility.

Heat Pumps As An Option
Some homeowners look at heat pumps, which can lower the cost of heating, especially in milder climates. Installation costs vary, and some programs and rebates may help. Talk to a licensed contractor and get several quotes.
Do The Cheap Things First
Whatever your fuel, the same basics apply. Seal drafts, change the filter, bleed radiators, and use a programmable thermostat to avoid heating an empty house.A tune-up for your furnace or boiler before winter helps it run efficiently, and a technician can spot safety problems like cracks or leaks.
Safety Comes With Cold Weather
Make sure carbon monoxide alarms work on every level. Fuel-burning equipment makes the gas, and a vent blockage can send it into the home.Keep the area around the furnace, boiler or heater clear of boxes and storage. Never use an oven to heat a home.
Plan Your Budget
If you are in the group facing a higher bill, add up what you spent last winter and add a cushion. Many fuel dealers offer budget plans that spread costs across the year. The right plan depends on your fuel and your cash flow, so ask what your supplier offers before the cold weather arrives.
Watch The Forecast
A colder than normal winter raises demand for every fuel. Being ready for that, by sealing and insulating now, protects you whatever the forecast does.
If You Rent
You may not control the furnace, but you can still lower your bill. Use door draft stoppers, put plastic film on drafty windows and keep furniture away from heat vents.Ask your landlord who pays for heat and whether the system has been serviced. Tenants have the right to a safe, working heating system in most places, so report problems in writing.
Check The Chimney And Vents
If you burn wood or oil, have the chimney or flue inspected each year. Creosote and soot build up and can cause chimney fires. A blocked vent can also push exhaust back into the house.Make sure the vent outside is clear of snow or debris after a storm. Clear it gently by hand.
Stock Up Safely
If you use wood or pellets, buy early and store them dry and away from the house wall. If you use propane, keep your tank at a safe level and know your delivery schedule, since a run of cold weather can create delays.Keep an emergency kit with blankets, flashlights, batteries and a few days of food and water in case the heat fails or a storm stops deliveries.
Compare Suppliers
Fuel dealers set their own prices. Calling two or three of them can show a gap of several cents a gallon. Ask about delivery fees, minimum purchases and whether there is a discount for paying on time or in cash.Read any contract carefully, especially the price terms and the cancellation rules, before you sign.
Kids, Pets And Older Relatives
Keep indoor temperatures at a safe level for babies, older adults and anyone with a health condition. A bill is a problem you can solve later, but a house that is too cold is a risk to health today. If you cannot afford to keep the home warm, call your utility, your state energy office or your local help line right away rather than waiting.
Revisit The Plan In January
Check your usage and your fuel level in the middle of winter. If costs run higher than you expected, adjust early. Small changes in January save more than big ones in March.
More Stories You May Like

Heating With Gas Or Propane This Winter Should Cost Less But Electric Heat Is Expected To Cost More And Heating Oil Prices Are Forecast Up About 21%

Electricity Is Forecast To Average 18.2 Cents Per Kilowatt Hour In 2026 Which Is Nearly 5% Higher And East Coast Regions Could See Up To 7% A Year

Real Estate Experts Say A $4,700 New Garage Door Adds About $12,500 In Value And Can Beat Remodels That Cost Tens Of Thousands More

But like Clinton strategist James Carville’s much-quoted motto, for millions of voters the midterms were about a single issue - “the economy, stupid.” While Trump focused on multimillion-dollar pet projects in the nation's capital, Americans’ frustrations grew. Some 73 percent of U.S. voters disapproved of how he was handling gas prices and another 69 percent weren’t happy with the cost of living, according to a New York Times/SNSsurvey in late October. The Independent has analyzed how these kitchen-table economic issues played out in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska - three states long considered Republican strongholds that saw unexpected Democratic wins, and where voters faced particularly high gas prices, grocery bills and the brunt of Trump’s tariffs.

President Donald Trump saw Democrats flip key Congressional seats in historically Republican havens like Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. It essentially cut off 20 percent of the world’s oil supply and sent U.S. gas prices soaring. Gas stayed above $4 nationally for more days in 2026 than any year in history, Patrick De Haan, head petroleum analyst at price-tracking site GasBuddy, posted on X last month. “Americans do not like policy choices that are well-documented that contribute to higher prices,” De Haan told The Independent in an email. “Every state saw gas prices on election day higher nominally than ever before. As gas prices are a very visible issue, it was not a surprise that high gas prices hurt the incumbent party.”The pain was even more severe in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska, all of which voted for Trump in 2024. Prices in trio of states rose an average of $1.50 from February until Election Day, compared to $1.14 nationally, according to AAA. Kansas drivers have paid 57 percent more for gas since February, while Iowans are paying 60 percent more and Nebraska drivers were forking over 62 percent more for every gallon, AAA also noted.

High gas prices hit these states harder because drivers log more miles on the road, on average, to get where they need to go, according to data from insurance marketplace Policygenius. While residents of major coastal cities may have experienced higher prices at the pump, they typically don’t put in as many driving miles as Midwesterners because of more abundant public transportation. Here are average annual miles driven in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska compared to California and New York:

Kansas: 14,781 miles

Iowa: 14,745 miles

Nebraska: 14,846 miles

New York: 10,167 miles

California: 12,524 miles.

In late October, Trump addressed the gas-price crisis in a way that provided little solace for voters. (Getty Images)

Trump’s seeming indifference to high fuel prices has been even more painful for rural and agricultural workers in these states because they are more likely to drive diesel vehicles. A gallon of diesel was $6.29 on Election Day, a staggering 67 percent higher than it was the day Trump started the war in Iran, according to AAA.Some 70 percent of Iowans said the administration’s policies have turned gas prices into “a moderate or severe hardship,” according to a CNN/SSRS poll in early October.
Supermarket sting
Trump’s Iran war sent affordability shockwaves through the U.S. economy, pushing inflation up to three-year highs before settlingat3.7 percent in September. However that’s still a full percentage point higher than it was went voters elected Trump in November 2024, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Grocery prices, already elevated compared to 2025, crept up as record diesel costs made it more expensive for companies to transport food. The cost of groceries in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska rose faster than the national inflation rate for the first two years of Trump’s second term, according to data from the Council for Community and Economic Research:

National: 3.31%

Kansas: 3.55%

Iowa: 3.46%

Nebraska: 3.64%

The cost of groceries in Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska rose faster than the national inflation rate for the first two years of Trump’s second term (Getty)

While Trump touted big gains in the stock market, that likely didn’t have an impact on Midwest voters struggling with the cost of everyday items, said Michael E. Goldberg, executive director of the Veale Institute of Entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University.“Rising prices on everyday essentials create an inescapable reminder that overrides positive macroeconomic data (like GDP or stock gains) and severely punishes the governing party,” Goldberg told The Independent in an email. “We saw how that played out.”
Tariff troubles
In April 2025, Trump announced a long list of tariffs on countries exporting goods into the U.S. Ranging from 11 percent to 50 percent, the president insisted that U.S. trade partners - not American businesses and consumers - would cover the cost of levies. More than a year later, experts tell a different story. Trump’s tariffs cost consumers an average of $1,100 and small businesses have paid an average of $426,000.The tariffs hit the Midwest hard. Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska felt the impact more than nearly everywhere else as they’re among the nation’s top five states for gross farming income, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Trump’s tariffs hit the Midwest hard. Fertilizer, which farmers rely on to grow crops, rose by 45 percent from September 2025 to September 2026, according to the New York Farm Bureau (Getty Images)

Farmers did not take that price increase lightly. Julius Schaaf, a corn and soybean farmer for more than four decades, told MSNOW at an October Trump rally that the president’s trade policies were wreaking havoc.“A lot of the people that supported him were farmers that have a lot of equity in their property, and they can weather a storm for a while,” Schaaf said.“But you talk to the young guys that are just getting started and trying to buy inputs and inputs have gone through the roof - they’re the ones that are really struggling.”Schaaf was not alone in his concern about tariffs. Some 55 percent of Iowans said Trump’s tariffs are “a bad thing for the state,” according to a CNN/SSRS poll in early October.
Reversal of fortunes?
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said that the party’s top priorities for 2027 are ending the Iran war and repealing Trump’s tariffs, two moves that could save money for consumers and business owners. But those savings won’t happen overnight, Susan MacManus, professor emeritus of political science at the University of South Florida, told The Independent in an email. “It will take time to see any drops in prices that will significantly impact consumers,” MacManus said. “The economy is exceptionally complex, and it will take time for legislation to go into effect.”

Following Election Day, gas prices appear to have taken a noticeable dip. If you’re heading to work early this week, you may notice that prices have come down at gas stations throughout the area.Did you get out and vote? Were you able to cast your ballot during early voting or on Election Day? My experience was pretty good. We had no issues getting in and out, and voting was a breeze this year.Related: New Beer Store Opening in The Village of Hamburg, New YorkIt was an interesting election season, as it seemed there were more negative campaign ads than ever before. Thankfully, the election cycle is over, and we can enjoy a few months without campaign commercials, text messages, and phone calls from candidates!
Gas Prices Take a Noticeable Dip After Election Day
There seems to be some good news following Election Day. For whatever reason, gas prices have come down, and oil prices have also dropped following the election here in the United States. On my way into work, I noticed that gas prices at one local station had dropped below $4 per gallon! I’m not sure if that’s the case everywhere, since I was only driving my regular route this morning, but seeing gas prices under $4 definitely caught my attention.

Unsplash

Will Gas Prices Continue to Fall in New York?
There doesn’t seem to be any indication of whether prices will continue falling, but we can certainly be hopeful! As we get ready for the winter season, gas stations also begin transitioning to what is commonly called winter-blend gasoline. There is a lot of science behind seasonal fuel blends, but the transition can sometimes coincide with changes in what drivers pay at the pump. With gas prices coming down, now might be a good time to fill up your vehicle and get your gas cans ready for your snowblower. Like it or not, we’ll likely be putting those machines to use relatively soon!
What Happens Next With Oil Prices?
We’ll continue keeping an eye on gas prices and developments in the Middle East, including the ongoing situation involving Iran. Global events can have an impact on oil markets, which can eventually affect what we pay at the pump here in New York.Fingers crossed that we can enjoy an even bigger decline in gas prices in the weeks ahead!Click here to view photo gallery

McMaster on how Democrats' wins in the midterms might change the Iran war 10:31

Motorists could soon see U.S. gasoline prices fall below $4 a gallon for the first time since July, according to energy experts.Patrick De Haan, a petroleum expert at price-tracking firm GasBuddy, told CBS News that he expects the national average for gas, which the price-tracking firm put at $4.06 a gallon on Thursday, to dip below the $4 threshold by next week. He also predicted diesel could fall below $6 a gallon by Thanksgiving. The average price was still at $4.06 early Friday, according to GasBuddy.Gas and diesel prices have both dropped in recent weeks. The decline was largely due to market expectations that the U.S. midterm elections would underscore public dissatisfaction with the war in Iran and increase pressure on the Trump administration to strike a deal ending the conflict, De Haan said."Oil prices have been falling in the run-up to the election," he said. "My read is because there was optimism that after the midterms these problems would be addressed."
Other factors pushing down gas prices
Other factors are also putting downward pressure on fuel costs. Oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has picked up, easing constraints on global oil supply, De Haan said. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell below $100 on Thursday for the first time since September, trading at $97.44 by midday. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, was trading at $90.42 a barrel. The recent drop in gas prices is also partly due to seasonal shifts. Prices tend to dip in the fall when Americans pull back on road trips and summer travel, De Haan noted. Filling stations are already switching to winter-blend gas, which is less costly to produce than summer-blend fuel.Tom Kloza, chief energy adviser for Gulf Oil, predicts that the average U.S. gas price will sink below $4 within the next 10 days. The profit gas stations earn on each gallon of gas sold — currently around 75 cents per gallon — is also larger than usual."Historically, that is too outsized," he said in an email. "A more normal markup would be 40 cents a gallon, and that means that even if futures prices and physical markets hang around present levels, we should see lower pump prices for the foreseeable future."The Trump administration has used various tools to ease gas prices. That includes expanding access to tax-free red-dyed diesel, opening the door to Russian diesel imports, and waiving what's known as the Jones Act, a federal statute that requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be moved on ships that are U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed.

U.S. gas prices on track to fall below $4 a gallon, experts say

Elizabeth Warren is blaming President Donald Trump’s war with Iran for the sharp increase in gasoline prices facing American households, using an Election Day statement to connect the administration’s military decisions to the cost of living. The Massachusetts Democrat has repeatedly opposed the war, questioned its legal basis and pressed the administration over its economic consequences.Warren published the following message on X on November 3:
“Don’t forget: Donald Trump’s war with Iran has sent your gas prices skyrocketing.”
The statement is brief but direct. Warren identifies Trump as responsible for the war and links the conflict to higher fuel prices. The phrase “Don’t forget” frames the message as a reminder to voters about an economic consequence she believes should remain central to their assessment of the administration.Warren’s opposition to the Iran war began when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, 2026. That day, she called Trump’s decision dangerous and illegal, arguing that the Constitution gives Congress the authority to declare war. She called for the Senate to return immediately and vote on a War Powers Resolution. On March 3, Warren spoke on the Senate floor, urging Congress to block the war and investigate civilian harm. She argued that the conflict had been launched without an imminent threat to the United States and demanded accountability from the administration. Her remarks expanded her criticism from the legal authority for military action to the consequences of the strikes. Warren also raised concerns about the war’s financial effects on American households. On March 20, she wrote to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett and acting Council of Economic Advisers Chair Pierre Yared, asking them to address the mounting costs of the conflict. She urged Trump to end the war to prevent further economic and geopolitical harm. Her criticism has also focused on oil companies benefiting from the rise in energy prices. In June, Warren and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse wrote to major oil and gas companies seeking information about windfall profits and pricing decisions during the war. The senators said higher fuel costs were affecting households through gasoline, groceries, utilities and transportation. Warren’s Senate voting record shows that she supported measures seeking to direct the removal of U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran that had not been authorized by Congress. On April 22, she voted in favor of discharging a war powers resolution, which was rejected by the Senate. She also voted in favor of a related resolution on September 24. The economic consequences of the war have also been highlighted by the Joint Economic Committee’s Democratic minority. An October 26 report estimated that Trump’s oil and gas stock holdings had increased in value by as much as $35.8 million during 2026, bringing his total holdings in the sector to as much as $81.6 million. The report also estimated that Americans had spent an additional $101 billion on gasoline since the war began. These are committee estimates based on financial disclosures and market data, not judicial findings of wrongdoing. The Joint Economic Committee’s report is particularly relevant to Warren’s post because it links the war to both higher household fuel expenses and increased values in the president’s energy investments. The committee’s analysis provides a documented economic framework for the broader criticism Warren is making, although her November statement itself does not reference Trump’s personal investments.Warren’s position has remained consistent across her public statements, letters and votes: she believes the war was initiated without adequate congressional authorization and that its costs are being borne by American families. She has called for an end to the conflict and has pursued legislative and oversight efforts aimed at limiting its continuation. The phrase “Don’t forget” also gives the post an electoral dimension. Warren is reminding voters of the relationship she sees between the administration’s foreign policy and domestic economic pressure. Her statement does not provide a new gas-price figure, but it places rising fuel costs among the consequences she believes voters should consider.Warren’s Election Day message therefore reflects a broader campaign of opposition to Trump’s Iran policy. She is connecting the war’s legal questions, its financial effects and its potential benefits to energy companies to argue that the administration’s decisions have imposed substantial costs on the public.

They said the repair would cost more than $2,200, which she cannot afford. The situation was shared on the r/legaladvice subreddit, where the poster identified themselves as a 24-year-old female. She explains that she bought a used 2011 Toyota RAV4 from a Subaru dealership in Feb. 2025 along with a third-party extended warranty that covers the vehicle for up to three years or until it reaches roughly 212,000 miles. She said the vehicle's transmission started slipping a week after purchase, but the warranty covered a replacement that cost around $5,500. It also covered repairs for an oil consumption issue related to the intake manifold. However, she recently started hearing a grinding noise when turning and suspected the rear differential was failing. She brought the vehicle to her usual repair shop and was told the differential needed to be replaced.
An Issue With the Extended Warranty

Extended warranty claim nullified by DIY oil change- HELP! by u/Independent_Count106 in legaladvice
To her surprise, the repair shop contacted her and started asking about the vehicle's oil services, requesting records. But she pointed out that oil maintenance has nothing to do with the differential failure. The owner explained that she changed the oil herself at the recommended intervals but did not keep records of when she changed it, what oil or filters she used, or the vehicle’s mileage. The extended warranty on her vehicle is now nullified because she did the oil changes herself rather than through a licensed repair shop. She explained that she mostly uses the vehicle for work because she transports tools between job sites.Since she purchased the vehicle, she has put around 22,000 miles on it, and it now sits at roughly 196,000 miles. Without the vehicle, she can’t get to work and cannot afford the $2,200 repair, so she is turning to Reddit for answers.
Commenters Offer Some Advice
Under the post, one commenter told the owner to look over the warranty contract, explaining that some extended warranties require maintenance to be performed at licensed shops. The comment also suggested the owner look up Toyota’s recommended service intervals to see if they had a reasonable argument.Another commenter said the rear differentials require regular maintenance and suggested that failing to perform scheduled maintenance can void warranties. The owner responded and acknowledged that the vehicle requires regular differential maintenance. She said the recommended service interval is around 30,000 miles, but she had not checked the previous owner’s Carfax records to see whether it had been serviced before she purchased it.Now she suspects the extended warranty company is just trying to find reasons so they can deny her claims. But that hasn't been confirmed, and it remains unknown whether she was able to fight the denial.

Kyiv’s airstrikes have knocked 15 of Russia’s 38 major oil refineries out of operation — causing more than $23.2 billion in economic damage, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence (HUR) agency said Thursday. Just 12 refineries are running at reduced capacity following the precision strikes, which wiped out nearly all of Moscow’s oil sector income from 2025, the HUR estimated. The agency specifically cited five facilities that were hit as of September, including the massive Ryazan Oil Refining Company, with those refineries accounting for 33% of Russia’s total volumes. Ukraine knocks out 15 Russian oil refineries, causing $23.2 billion in damage: officials

The original owner parked a 1964 Chevelle Malibu in the yard in 1987 after it overheated, and it has not been started since. Now the car is on eBay with no reserve, and bidding sits at $4,000.

The seller says that cold water was added to the hot engine, oil and antifreeze mixed, and the car was never fired up again.Report: autoevolution
A Dealer Pickup That Became A Yard Ornament
The car is in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The seller suggests his father picked it up from the dealership, and he says it should be matching numbers. It left the factory with a 283 V8 and a two-speed Powerglide automatic. The sale includes the wheel covers, the bill of sale, the manuals and the ash trays. It appears to have sat under a tarp for at least several decades. The seller notes that the floor and trunk pans need to be replaced.
The Title Wasn’t Ready Yet
The listing first said a title was available. Then the seller said his father could not find it, so a new one was due to be printed on Monday, October 26.Paperwork matters with any old car. A clean title is the difference between a project and a pile of parts.
$4,000 Bid, $5,200 To End It Right Now
The auction has no reserve. The current bid is $4,000, and the Buy It Now price is $5,200.The listing had about three days left when the report ran. That is a low price for a first-generation Chevelle, but the car’s needs are real.
What Chevrolet Built In 1964
The 1964 Chevelle lineup included the Series 300 sedan, the Series 300 wagon, the Malibu coupe and the Malibu convertible. The El Camino returned in 1964 as the Chevelle pickup.Chevrolet placed the Chevelle below the Impala. It offered two six-cylinder engines, a 194 and a 230, and borrowed the 283 and 327 small-block V8s from the Impala. This car has the 283 and the Powerglide, a pairing meant for an easy ride rather than a drag strip.
An Overheated Engine Is A Big Question Mark
When oil and antifreeze mix, the cause is usually a failed head gasket, a cracked head or a damaged block. The seller’s account fits that pattern.A mechanic should inspect everything under the hood before any offer, as the report suggests. A pressure test, a leak-down test and a look inside the cylinders would tell the real story.
Why Cold Water Into A Hot Engine Is A Classic Mistake
When an engine overheats, the metal is very hot. Pouring cold water into the cooling system at that moment can crack a cylinder head or a block, because the sudden change in temperature makes the metal shrink unevenly. The safe move is to shut the engine off, let it cool, and open the radiator cap only when the engine is cool to the touch. It is advice every driver should know.A cooling system that is flushed on schedule, with good hoses and a healthy thermostat and water pump, prevents most overheating trouble in the first place.
What To Do When The Title Is Missing
A missing title is common with cars that sat for decades, and the rules differ from state to state. Many states issue a duplicate title to the person listed on the old one, and some allow a bonded title when records are missing. Before bidding, ask the seller exactly what paperwork will arrive with the car. Ask the state motor vehicle office what it needs from you, since the process is easier when the seller is willing to sign over what they have.A bill of sale, which this car comes with, helps tell the history even when the title is late.
How To Evaluate A Parked Car Before You Bid
Start with the structure. Floor pans and trunk pans can be replaced, but rusted frame rails, rocker panels and rear quarters cost far more.Check the seller’s story against the car. A 1964 Chevelle with a 283 and Powerglide should have the right engine stampings, data plate and VIN, and they should agree with each other.Find out what it will take to move the car. A car that has sat for decades may have seized brakes and flat tires, so budget for a flatbed.Look at the interior and the glass. Missing pieces of trim and cracked windshields are small items that cost real money and take time to locate.Think about the end result. A restored Chevelle Malibu is a classic that families love, but a restoration can cost far more than the car will be worth, so decide whether you want the project or the finished car.For the right buyer, a one-owner car with the original paperwork and a bill of sale is a rare starting point. For everyone else, it is a story that ends at the winning bid.
More Stories You May Like

Classic Car Owner Admits He Drove His De Tomaso Pantera With Zero Oil Pressure Because He Trusted A Flaky Gauge Then Drained The Sump To Find Out If He Got Away With It

1967 Shelby GT350 Parked By The Same Owner In 1989 Sat For Over 37 Years Before Selling For $135,000 At A South Dakota Auction

Guy Hunting For Van Parts At A Wrecking Yard Stumbles On A 1959 Willys Overland Truck Showing 93,000 Miles That Looks Like It Sat In A Backyard For Decades

The rule, adopted in 2023, does not require anyone to replace a working water heater. But starting in January 2028, a year later than planned, most Bay Area property owners replacing a gas water heater will have to install a model that emits no nitrogen oxides, typically an electric heat pump.Low-income owners, those who spend heavily on housing, and homes with tight spaces or outdated electrical systems can apply for exemptions. The vote is the latest sign that California is easing off on its push to cut pollution from home appliances, one of the largest sources of smog-forming emissions. Last year, Southern California air regulators rejected a plan to phase out gas water heaters and furnaces, and the California Air Resources Board has backed away from requiring all new space and water heaters sold to be zero-emission by 2030.Supporters say the Bay Area is different. Regulators built in years to review the rules before they took effect, and SPUR, a Bay Area urban policy nonprofit, says the exemptions largely match what environmental groups asked for to address property owners’ concerns, even if they go further than advocates would have liked. In an email, an air district spokesperson said the just-passed water heater rule would prevent up to 16 premature deaths and 21 new asthma cases annually, and avoid $90 million in healthcare costs. But staff also estimate the exemptions could put roughly half of the rule’s originally projected pollution cuts out of reach.A heat pump water heater costs about $3,500 more to install than a gas model, according to the air district. Heat pump water heaters use roughly a third to a quarter as much energy as standard gas models, but because electricity often costs more than gas in California, savings on utility bills are smaller. Property owner groups say the rules will become a financial burden to many residents. “The proposed mandate really doesn’t take into account all the nuances that have to be factored in when you look at many of the multi-unit buildings in the Bay Area that were built in the ’60s and ’70s, and even much earlier,” said Joshua Howard, executive vice president of local public affairs for the California Apartment Association. Some board members agreed. Ray Mueller, a San Mateo County supervisor, said he wished the board could repeal the rule entirely. Shamann Walton, a San Francisco County supervisor, voted no after speaking about affordability concerns. Benicia Mayor Steve Young abstained. But board member John Gioia, a Contra Costa County supervisor who voted to delay the rule, said the amendments address affordability concerns. “We need to do this in a way that respects that lower-income residents may not be able to afford it. We need to figure out how to help them,” Gioia said. “And let’s face it, the exemptions are big enough to drive a truck through.”
Who’s exempt
Under the amended rule, people with incomes at or below 80% of the area median, or who are enrolled in programs such as Medi-Cal or CalFresh, can avoid installing an electric water heater and instead install a gas one. So can people whose mortgage and property tax payments add up to at least 28% of their gross income. The air district estimates about 20% of Bay Area households qualify.Homes with physical barriers, such as a cramped closet, a low ceiling or an electrical panel too small to handle a heat pump, get a one-time exemption, covering an estimated 20% of installations. People can continue to buy water heaters 30 gallons or smaller, about 10% of sales, because no zero-emission models of that size are available in the U.S.Larger water heaters, common in apartment buildings and businesses, now have until 2033 instead of 2031.
Statewide efforts
The state Air Resources Board, which once aimed for all new space and water heaters sold in California to be zero-emission by 2030, has scaled back its plans. At a December 2025 workshop, air board staff proposed instead capping sales of gas models and creating a credit system that would let manufacturers switch to zero-emission equipment more slowly. The air board is “continuing to meet with interested parties to understand their feedback and evaluating potential revisions,” to the rules, said spokesperson Lindsay Buckley. Still, the state backed the Bay Area’s rule. In a letter to the board, an agency official said the rule “contributes to California’s broader strategy to reduce building-sector emissions while delivering public health, clean air, environmental justice, and climate benefits.” In Southern California, the South Coast Air Quality Management District proposed rules last year that would have set rising targets for manufacturers to sell more zero-emission appliances, with fees on gas models. It backed down under pressure from the Trump administration. Advocates say that makes the Bay Area’s rule, even scaled back, a rare step forward.“The state and the Bay Area are doing a great job of trying to push things forward in a more challenging environment,” said Tony Sirna, deputy policy director of environmental group Evergreen Action. “We’re pedaling just as hard, but we’re facing headwinds, and so we are making slower progress than we would have otherwise.”
The cost of switching
The air district estimates up to 120,000 Bay Area households replace a water heater each year. A consultant for the district estimated the amended rules will cost those households about $372.8 million a year, after accounting for about $60.8 million in energy bill savings. Howard, of the apartment association, said the district “needs to recognize the true cost of the mandate.”Adam Pearce, president of the California Rental Housing Association, said the newly-passed rule does not fix property owners’ concerns, and just “kicks the issue down the road.” “We’re not against clean air and healthy living. Certainly providing quality housing coincides with all of that,” he said. But forcing change isn’t the answer, Pearce added. “They would get a lot more buy-in over time if it was incentive-based.”Advocates say incentives can help close the gap. The Bay Area will receive about $55 million a year in heat pump incentive funds over the next few years, according to SPUR estimates, said Sam Fishman, a policy manager for the group.“These rules are a really big deal,” Fishman said. “They are a strong market signal that can ramp up demand for heat pumps in California, show that they work, and build demand both from consumers, from contractors, from manufacturers at every level of the supply chain.”<nbtemplate data-content="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" data-id="MediaPlatformAmplitudeButton"></nbtemplate>
