Some of the top contenders in Class B Boys Golf are familiar faces at the varsity level, one of those being Northern Lights’ Payne Wilkie

The sophomore hopes to make a repeat trip to the state golf tournament this year.

Wilkie has been playing the sport since he was five years old, competing at varsity meets since seventh grade.

Part of his success in the sport comes from a commitment to making up strokes on his scorecard around the green, something that’s always been a major focus of his development.

“Being able to chip, putt, that’s where you get strokes and that’s what we need to work on and hopefully I can do better at that. Ever since I was young, I always worked on short game and never hit a lot of range balls, always was at the putting green and got a lot better every year and hopefully I can just keep getting better,” Wilkie said.

Wilkie was just four shots off the lead in his latest golf meet on Monday in Garrison.
