(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento city, county and California officials celebrated the opening of a downtown affordable housing complex that is dedicated to accommodating individuals experiencing homelessness.

The Danco Group, a housing development company, hosted a ribbon cutting Thursday morning for Central Sacramento Studios on H Street.

The downtown Sacramento development is a California Homekey project that converted the Best Western Plus Sutter House into a permanent supportive housing complex with 93 units. Several of the units are dedicated to mental health services.

Amenities for residents include communal areas, a fitness center, laundry rooms a vegetable garden and a swimming pool.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, the author of the Mental Health Services Act, expressed the importance of having affordable housing options in the community.

“What’s beautiful about this project and about Homekey and about now the passage of Proposition 1 is that it’s whatever it takes including housing,” Steinberg said. “Including care and treatment that people need, including other assistance they need in order to be able to regain their dignity.”

Funding for the renovations came through $23.9 million of the state’s Homekey program.

California launched Project Homekey as a state-funded initiative to create more permanent housing solutions for people experiencing homelessness. The initiative aims to transform underutilized facilities into permanent housing.

State officials said that nearly $2 billion will go toward cities in the next round of Homekey with a focus on housing veterans and those experiencing behavioral health challenges.

Central Sacramento Studios is one of two permanent housing complexes for the homeless community that recently opened in downtown Sacramento. The Capitol Park Hotel reopened in January as the St. Clare, which includes 134 remodeled studio apartments.
