Shipping container filled with equipment stolen from farmers market, organizers say

(FOX40.COM) — The organization behind the Florin Certified Farmers Market said supplies needed for the market’s operations were stolen this week.

Alchemist CDC, the non-profit that runs the weekly market, said a shipping container storing essential equipment was targeted by thieves around 5:04 a.m. on Monday.

The shipping container was located at the Florin Light Rail Station near Florin Road and Indian Lane where the farmers’ market takes place. The organization said the equipment and supplies total a loss of over $5,000.

“They had the trucks, they had the liftgate and the winch they needed to be able to get the container out of there in no time flat,” Shannin Stein with Alchemist CDC told FOX40.com.

Organizers said they have been working closely with the Sacramento Police Department during its investigation. The non-profit is asking the public for any information that may have led to the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of the suspects.

“We’re hopeful that through our cooperation and all the businesses here that have shared camera footage, it won’t necessarily be about us getting our property back,” Stein said. “But it’ll be about SPD being able to stop what is most likely a much larger crime operation than what just happened to us.”

Despite the stolen property, the farmers market operated as usual on Thursday. The Florin Certified Farmers Market runs every Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon on 3001 Florin Road.

Alchemist CDC also operates a weekly farmers market in Rancho Cordova at the Sunrise Light Rail Station at 11164 Folsom Road. The Sunrise Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The non-profit plans to run a farmers market every Sunday at 3501 Meadowview Road in Sacramento. The grand opening for the Meadowview Farmers Market is set for June 9.
