A new coffee shop is on its way to Upper Land Park, filling in the long absence of a dedicated cafe for the neighbourhood. Offbeat Coffee , a concept that has been going around town in pop-up format, has secured the space at 600 Broadway, Suite A . The operators are aiming to open in the summer. This news was first seen in Sacramento Business Journal .

Offbeat Coffee started as a pop-up concept by Vivian Tran and Thao Nguyen , who moved to Sacramento from San Jose at the beginning of this year. The pair has held events at Majka Pizzeria & Bakery and Pipeworks thus far as a way to test their menu items.

Tran and Nguyen are both coffee enthusiasts and both worked in specialty coffee Southern California while attending university. Tran then had the opportunity to learn about coffee roasting and production whereas Nguyen came from the film industry and combined her passion for videography and coffee together.

“One thing that we both agree on is that coffee brings people together in such an authentic way and we would love to foster that type of environment if we ever had a space to do so. We want people to come as they are and we thought the word “offbeat” was the perfect fit to embrace that vision,” Tran told What Now Detroit in an email.

Tran and Nguyen are currently working on renovating the space to add a service counter, pour-over bar, seating area and retail section, and a roastery in the back, according to The Business Journal . The menu will feature a wide variety of drip coffees, pour-overs, espresso drinks, and specialty options drawing inspirations from their heritage.

“One of our favorites so far is the Saigon Cinnamon latte. We are both from Vietnamese backgrounds and want to incorporate our heritage into the menu. The drink is lightly sweetened with condensed milk and topped off with Saigon cinnamon, which is known to be a slightly sweeter variety of cinnamon!” Tran said.

Until Offbeat Coffee’s new roastery becomes fully operative, the operators said they’d most likely continue to source their single-origin coffee beans from Academic Coffee Company in San Jose. Once renovations are complete, Offbeat Coffee will open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the week. As of now, the operators anticipate to open their doors in the summer.

“We want to say a thank you to everyone who has come out to support us so far and to those who we might get to serve in the future. It’s been a long and hectic journey but it’s also been so worth it. We would love to meet you all and chat about coffee, drinks, food, and everything else as well,” Tran said.
