Ginny Mohrbutter: The Twin Counties' tornado recovery — one year later
How can we forget July 19, 2023, when an EF-3 Tornado hit our Twin Counties community? The winds reached speeds of 150 miles per hour and left a path of destruction across our community. From Dortches in Nash County to the Pfizer Plant and over to Edgecombe County, the tornado snapped trees, destroyed homes and left a debris field for miles. Tornado responders were on the scene immediately — our law enforcement, emergency management, fire departments, governmental leaders, nonprofit agencies, volunteers, faith leaders and many...

However, the action did not occur without an extensive discussion by some council members about subjects regarding downtown revitalization and leases of city-owned buildings. The...

Mary Currie: Planning for the future saves loved ones time, stress
We never know when sickness, other serious health issues and even death will happen. Now is a good time to review what plans we have to complete before it is too late. Below are four areas you should get started on to make sure your assets are going where you want them to end up to save your beneficiaries time and money. The first step is to review your will to make sure it is up-to-date. If you don’t have a will, make it a...
Review: Stepping up the tech and innovation, an all-electric SUV packs in aplenty
Honda is reimagining the sport utility vehicle by combining cutting-edge technology, innovation and clean energy with the 2024 all-electric Honda Prologue. When you first sit in the driver’s seat, you will notice the roomy interior that feels like other Honda SUVs, along with the lack of gear shifter in the center console. You may need some time to get used to the gear shifter being positioned on the steering column where you would typically find the windshield wiper lever. ...
Chet Osterhoudt: Should you be a global investor?
Investment opportunities don’t stop at the U.S. border. But what should you know about investing internationally? To begin with, what is an international investment? Essentially, it’s an investment in companies based outside the United States. Investors can purchase individual foreign stocks, but many people choose international mutual funds or international exchange-traded funds, which can be traded like stocks and track a specific market index. It’s also possible to invest in bonds issued by foreign governments or entities. However, investors should typically focus on diversified funds...
Matthew Stevens: Crinum lily is a landscape favorite that is reliably hardy
Although new plants are introduced into the landscape trade each year, there are some plants that have been a part of our landscapes reliably for years on end without ever falling out of favor. There’s something familiar, even comforting perhaps, to have such consistency in our gardens. One such plant...
Mystery Plant: Wildflower has a big bloom that draws attention
Flowers, of course, come in quite an assortment of sizes. The smallest flowers of any plant you are likely to see probably belong to the tiny, floating duckweeds. And the largest flowers of trees, at least in North America, must surely belong to various species of magnolia. But what wildflower has the biggest bloom? Could it be this one?
Editorial: Why we simply can't get enough Summer Games
Every four years, we have a habit of scheduling our summer activities around something as American as basketball — and gymnastics — and swimming, golf and track and field, too. With the Olympics, and the Summer Games, particularly, we’re all treated to some truly can’t-miss television moments. Not only is it fun to watch, there’s something that stirs in us just knowing Americans are vying for medals. Even the way we walk to our couches to catch the next event is brimming with a healthy...

Senate; Nash County Board of Education members LaShawnda Washington and Sharonda Thomas Bullock; and Jamon Whitfield, a District 2 candidate running unopposed for one of the seven school board seats up for grabs...

Letter: How do you explain the Jan. 6 debacle?
The other night I saw an interview with one of former President Donald Trump's sons. It was after the shooting. The son stated that Trump's granddaughter saw the leftist attack, which he quickly changed to: “A leftist crime.” He, like his dad, rolled into a series of assumptive lies and exaggerations. Was the grandchild aware her granddad was found liable in a civil trial of attacking a woman? That he...
