No more ‘Little' Lions? State College Area School District may change logo, mascot, motto

State College Area School District is proposing a rebranding effort that would give the district a new logo and academic seal, a distinctive lion mascot and a new motto while preserving its traditional maroon and gray colors. The proposal is the latest step in a yearslong effort led by a district rebranding committee, which found a need for a more consistent and modern visual identity across the district. The current logo was developed by a former student in 1985. State College Area High School Principal Laura Tobias said the results of a school community survey also showed there is strong support for dropping “Little” from Little Lions. If approved, the district’s athletics teams would instead be known as the Lions. “When talking to students, they were like, ‘We don’t like being called little. We’re not little,’” Tobias said Monday during a school board meeting. “When you’re in an athletic competition, you don’t go, ‘Go Little Lions.’ They usually say, ‘Go State.’ There was this really conflicting, ‘Well, who are we?’” The proposal calls for students and community members to partner with the district’s art department to submit original concepts with the goal of creating a unified brand for the district

Elections over, Shapiro quiet on commitment to federal school choice program

(The Center Square) – Roughly 1.8 million students in Pennsylvania are potentially impacted by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s waffling over joining the federal school choice tax credit program. With elections in the rearview, its unclear when the administration will publicize its decision. The Center Square was unsuccessful in reaching the governor’s communications team on Thursday. In the meantime, a vocal coalition of program supporters sent a letter to Shapiro encouraging him to opt-in giving families access to educational support long financially out of reach. “That’s what makes this program so exciting,” said Jenny Sved, executive director of Teach PA, and one of nearly two dozen signatories from The Coalition for Educational Freedom, in a statement shared with The Center Square. “Whether it’s helping a family afford Jewish day school tuition, giving a public school student access to tutoring or SAT prep, or providing additional support for a child with special needs, this is a win for families across Pennsylvania.” The proposed program regulations from the Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service allow eligible taxpayers to claim an annual credit of up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions to scholarship-granting organizations, or up to $3,400 for married couples filing jointly.

State College Area School District Rebranding Effort Looks to Update Logo, Mascot and Motto

State College Area School District is considering a proposal that would update the district's logo, establish a new motto and change the high school and middle school mascot name from "Little Lions" to simply "Lions," among other rebranding efforts. Maroon and gray would remain as the district's colors, and the eight elementary school mascots and logos would remain unchanged. The school board on Monday heard an overview of the proposal from members of the rebranding committee, which was formed during the 2024-25 school year to explore developing more consistent visual identity across the district. The committee has worked with Jostens' branding team to conduct school community surveys and gathered feedback from high school student groups. The district's current primary logo was designed by a student in 1985, and over time other marks have been used as well, including the block S, varied lion imagery and a paw print. "Currently, we have a lack of comprehensive guide to identify approved markings, fonts, colors and the appropriate use of our logos," Jonathan Bucher, assistant superintendent for secondary education, said. "This work that we're looking to do will give staff and community partners a consistent reference for branding our school district." The current
