The first proposed amendment will change property tax evaluation for large landowners in agriculture and timber. Peanut butter on a hot dog? Even Mayor Miller is getting involved

Well, Macon, I’ve apparently started a controversy. And of all the things I could have possibly become known for in this wonderful city, I never imagined it would involve a hot dog, a jar of peanut butter and the Mayor of Macon! But here we are, and apparently my taste in hot dog toppings has become a matter of public discussion. Who knew that something so delicious could cause so much commotion? It all started during a recent episode of my Let’s Eat podcast about Macon Burger Week. One of my fellow Burger Squad members mentioned that cream cheese was an incredibly underrated topping for hamburgers. As we talked about unusual toppings, he suggested cream cheese might even be delicious on a hot dog. That’s when I casually mentioned that my absolute favorite hot dog topping is peanut butter. You would have thought I’d suggested putting motor oil on pancakes! The reactions were priceless, and apparently there are people walking among us who believe peanut butter belongs exclusively on sandwiches, crackers and celery sticks. Macon-Bibb County Commission seeks to put penny sales tax on future ballots

The Macon-Bibb County Commission wants to ask voters to decide whether to renew an additional penny sales tax that Mayor Lester Miller credits with helping reduce property tax rates over the past five years. The OLOST — which stands for Other Local Option Sales Tax — is a penny-on-the-dollar sales tax first approved by Bibb County voters in 2021. The county commission voted during its meeting Tuesday evening to approve a measure that would allow voters to decide in March whether to renew it for another five years. The ballot item still must be approved by the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections. Miller said the OLOST has been used to help roll back the millage rate from 20.33 to 9.575 mills. “If it passes then, of course, we’ll continue to collect the penny sales tax and we’ll continue to use that to offset property taxes,” Miller said. “If we put this on the referendum and it fails, then we’ll revert back to the other rate or substantially cut the budget by millions and millions of dollars.” Commissioner Donice Bryant asked if there would be any public hearings or meetings on the matter.
